This one is just unreal and crazy. And will spark massive protests again. Sickening.
Victim is still alive.

Their police unions (which mostly are aligned with the GOP and Trump) protect them from accountability.
The only way out of this is to dissolve the unions and rehire based on merit.

LEOs can of course also be Law Enforcement Organizations but that's not the common vernacular I'm familiar with.

That man was not a raging maniac. If any one or two officers had put away their guns, they could have restrained him. This was murder.

(32,980 posts)snip--"The Kenosha News reported that neighbors said the shooting victim was a man who was trying to break up a fight between two women. Bystanders said the man was Tased and then shot several times.
A video circulating on social media shows a man in a white shirt and black shorts walking to a gray van, followed by two male police officers with weapons drawn. The video does not show what happened before the man walked away from the officers, nor what was said, if anything.
As the man opens the door to get in, an officer grabs his shirt to hold him still, then appears to shoot him in the back at close range. Seven shots are heard, followed by a car horn, presumably from the man's head falling forward. A woman who followed behind the police can be seen screaming and jumping up and down."

(19,066 posts)Yes, the police departments are full of racists, but I rink training is a huge part of it too. From the minute these officers start training theyre shown video after video of what could go wrong. They watch video after video of cops getting shot or shot at.
So a guy getting in a car is an excuse. I way they could have seen him reaching for a gun that quickly. He opened the door when they started shooting. Cops are terrified because theyve been trained to be scared all the time.

(18,486 posts)You can't train that kind of aggressiveness out of someone. He never should have been hired in the first place.
Johnny2X2X
(19,066 posts)Training. Racism. Testosterone filled new hires.
First thing they need to do is vet these new hires the way the FBI vets their hires. Really dig into their background and weed out anyone with a hint of racism or the wrong personality.
And this might be controversial. But pay them better. Make it a more desirable job and you can be more selective and get better people for the job.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)It starts with hiring. Hire the right people and the training will work much better.
And paying people well helps ensure that the departments attract qualified professionals and aren't a dumping ground for people who can't get hired anywhere else.

(1,568 posts)With better training, then officers could have been more prepared to subdue him before he reached the car and was able to put himself in a situation in which the police were unsure if he was trying to get a firearm or other weapon. If someone doesn't listen and they cannot deploy a taser, or a taser doesn't work, then the gun is their only tool right now. As soon as they pull out their guns, if the person doesn't comply the only way it will end is for the person to do something that makes the officers believe he's going to cause harm, at which point the cops shoot. If the cops were trained in hand to hand combat, and able to take down suspect with confidence (due to training), then they could have stopped him before he even reached the vehicle. Of course the other option is to just let him walk to his car without hassle. Maybe he was seeking a weapon or maybe he just planned on driving away. Whether or not that would be a good choice seems dependent on why he was being approached to begin with.
Another thing is that we need to have some sort national agency that will field complaints about local police. This agency should be highly transparent and effective at finding and rooting out bad officers. So many times people have poor attitudes toward police, because the police harass them. That leads to what many of us may see as irrational behavior when dealing with the police (assholes or decent). If it happens all the time, you're eventually going to snap. If people feel they have actual recourse against bullying police behavior, then that would likely lead to a better attitude by police to the public, and by the public toward police.

(90,346 posts)... me.
There are over 500 videos this summer of cops acting worse than the criminals.
Sapient Donkey
(1,568 posts)There needs to be a way to regain the trust of the police. Trust that if they misbehave, or they become excessively aggressive and violent, then they will be held accountable. Not just for the egregious acts of needlessness killing/maiming non-threatening people, but also the more mundane unjustified harassment. Over the years I have had frustrating encounters with some cops who were just power tripping jerkoffs. I had the urge to tell them to screw off and just ignore them, but I held it back. But ultimately I can count on one hand, and I also never felt too threatened in the situations. However, if I had to deal with that sort of stuff regularly, then I could easily see my attitude change. A federal agency that is fair, transparent, effective, efficient, and powerful to handle such complaints seems like it might go at least some of the way toward helping. Of course it would have to have powers to deal with local police forces that do no cooperate. Not sure how that would work.

Also 'failure to cooperate' should not be a death sentence; the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
And whites are generally given far more latitude in these situations because their lives are seen as having value.

The trigger-happy cop should be arrested for attempted murder, and tried for murder one if the victim dies.
Every time this happens, now that the shootings are caught on video, a piece of America dies around the world. Why should anyone anywhere believe we are for democracy and justice if we allow this to happen again and again and again with no stop to it.
