Melania Trump Faces Backlash for Rose Garden Renovation: 'She Cut Down Jackie's Trees!'

First lady Melania Trump faced backlash from social media users on Saturday, as photos of her completed Rose Garden refurbishment initiative sparked a range of objections online.

The Rose Garden is a White House relic, originally commissioned for landscaping renewal in the early 1960s, during John F. Kennedy's presidency. Jackie Kennedy oversaw the garden's construction during her time as first lady and is often associated with its design and legacy.

Melania Trump's renovation, which she said aimed to restore some of the Kennedys' original vision, removed much of the foliage and color that became characteristic of the space.

"Can we talk about how Jackie Kennedy's Rose Garden was colorful and diverse and beautiful and Melania just made it... white?" one Twitter user wrote in response to photos of the renovation that surfaced on Saturday. The remark echoed many that noted the garden's sparing appearance and primarily white palette.

Birds also rely on trees to navigate. Both the birds and the trees deserved better.

She apparently, so I've read, sees herself as the new Jackie Kennedy, but we all know she's a knockoff, the cheap porn version that doesn't even come close.

I hate her for screwing with the bird's (and our) trees. The spring blooms will be missed by many creatures for a multitude of reasons. She will be missed like a canker sore.

I hope that the trees were only moved but that doesn't mean they will survive. I will try to hope for the best.

Thank God they are limited to what decorating changes can be made to the White House itself or it would be looking as tacky as their Trump Tower apartment.

As she orders much of the shrubbery to be dug up and replanted elsewhere. Bring back the rich colors that graced the Garden to be a Happy place.

Definitely the changes reflect the same aesthetic that was behind the frightening post-apocalyptic Christmas displays Melania directed...

Melania also swapped out the colorful tulips and other bright perennials and annuals in Mellon’s design for white and pastel roses and sharp boxwood hedges. Mellon said Kennedy had asked for the vibrant look. “The President loved flowers and asked if a variety of other types could be mixed with the roses. He had read the published garden notes of Thomas Jefferson and hoped for flowers used in Jefferson’s period,” she wrote.

From the Vox piece quoted above I visited the White House Historical Association's history of the Kennedy Rose Garden, which is worth a look.

Also... it's interesting that they're (reportedly) moving the crab apples. They typically don't last a whole lot longer than the 60 years they've been there. They could have replaced them, but the original trees are approaching the end of their lives.
