Social media erupted with mockery Sunday after the Republican National Committee announced that they were abandoning any efforts to debate, update, or adopt an official party platform at the Republican National Convention, which kicks off Monday, deriding the decision as the latest example of the GOPs sacrifices of their principles to a Trumpian cult of personality.

The decision was announced in a resolution released by the RNC on Sunday, which cited how the party had significantly scaled back the size and scope of the convention due to the pandemic, and so the 2020 convention would adjourn without adopting a new platform. Instead, the RNC will continue to enthusiastically support the Presidents America-first agenda.
All platforms are snapshots of the historical contexts in which they are born, and parties abide by their policy priorities, rather than their political rhetoric, the resolution said, going on to say that if the Platform Committee had met, it would have undoubtedly unanimously agreed to reassert the Partys strong support for President Donald Trump and his Administration.
The resolution also made several swipes at the media for outrageously misrepresent[ing] the implications of the RNC skipping the whole platform process.

(10,885 posts)In modern usage, "killing the fatted calf" can simply mean to celebrate in an exuberant manner, as used in the Elton John song "Bennie and the Jets".

(26,076 posts)It is a Nazi slogan. It is too disgusting for me to write out tbh.
Trump et al would literally use that as their slogan if they could get away with it.

(54,384 posts)I live in Germany, and had never heard of this.
Of course, Nazi propaganda is forbidden by law here, so, no surprise. Even Fox Noise got nowhere negotiating for a license to broadcast in German here. I guess the resemblance to Nazi propaganda was a little too much for the government here.

I had tentative plans with my daughter for a trip to Barcelona that I would like to re-implement!

(54,384 posts)If our numbers come down proportionately to match what they are here, then there is a good chance. Keep in mind, though, how much progress wed have to make!
Also, since Biden already knows many of the leaders here, much of the ill feelings now existing will evaporate overnight, once he is confirmed as President-elect. Contacts will be established immediately. Biden will be careful not to conduct our foreign policy prior to taking office, but unofficial damage control will start right away.
I used to live in Barcelona, still run down there every six weeks or so, and speak Catalan. It is one of my favorite cities in the world. Good choice!

(63,912 posts)I found myself in Pamplona (not during either running of the bulls thank god) and loved that city. Beautiful, mannered people, not at all the dusty place we might have imagined based on the bull running (isn't it really ghastly?).
Must go to Barcelona with dtr. A true bucket list item (I am old).

(54,384 posts)Franco was still dictator, and I had no idea what to expect. I arrived at my Catalan family knowing no Catalan at all, and unfamiliar with European Spanish. My two high school teachers had been Dominican and Cuban, although the Cuban had been a highly educated Cuban who knew French and Italian, and never used a Cuban accent in class, which is almost incomprehensible to most Spaniards.
Our host families had been "instructed" to speak Spanish when we were around, but at age 16, you're curious to learn the world, so I told them to go ahead and continue speaking Catalan among themselves so I could learn it. They were very relieved, as asking Catalans to speak Spanish among themselves is like asking a family of Appalachian Hillbillies to speak Shakespearian English among themselves in your presence. Even if they could, they'd have a hard time remembering to do it always. As this was during the Fascist era, Catalan was still forbidden in the schools, so they all knew fluent Spanish.
It was a different world for me, of course, but I adapted easily enough. By the time I had to go back to the States, I had embraced the place as home, and didn't want to leave. At least I get to go back on a regular basis.
As I was getting ready to leave for the USA this past July, something popped up in Barcelona that needed my immediate attention. By that time, it was too late for me go. My colleague there that had asked me to come speaks decent German, so I asked one the guys from my Dutch office, who speaks good German also, if he could fly down there and cover for me. He had never been to Barcelona before either. After the work part, he had a couple of hours before he had to go back to the airport for the flight back to Amsterdam. My colleague in Barcelona took him across the street for a simple, but fabulous lunch, and then my Dutch colleague walked over to the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's famous work, which was only a ten minute walk away.
After he got back to the Netherlands, I asked him how liked Barcelona, or what he had seen of it in the few hours he was there. He simply wrote: "I'll be back!"

(10 posts)... if your idea is to impose full totalitarian rule from Nov onwards.
This might show their hubris/confidence that this will be the way forward for the USA after they 'successfully' win/steal the election.
I'd take it as an open loudspoken part of how the future is, if we don't match their energy and exceed it. It's not like they're hiding it.
On the positive side, when they show all their cards (because they believe they will win no matter way, but anyway), you get all the choices of pathways to defeat it. And just because they may not believe they have to look at our hand, because that is immaterial in the obvious future that will become real, doesn't mean we don't have a hand that can beat them.
Let them lose by hubris alone!

(3,131 posts)A platform is inconvenient.
Free trade? Trumps against that so strike that.
Fiscal responsibility. Thats always been a lie for the rubes, but were trillions of dollars in the red this year.
Family values? Again, always has been bs, but with trumps family taking half the speaking slots and in charge of stealing from the government family values is too easily mocked.
Anything else is likely to be contradicted the same day by trump.
Much better to leave the platform whatever trump wants. Its the truth anyway.

(94,572 posts)Party Platforms are a vestige of the days when candidates didn't campaign as individuals (100+ years ago) and what the Party stood for was a critical message.

(3,131 posts)I dont pay much attention to platforms or state of the union for a similar reason. Theres nothing binding in them so they are just symbolic.
This is a different in that there are good odds that trump would directly contradict things they out in the platform before the election.
Not that anyone would care that trump was doing contradictory things again, but with no platform thats one less thing to deal with.
