Unfortunately, one of the most important actions that was taken by the Reagan and the Republicans was the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. It opened up the flood gates for the fascist propagandists to spew their message of hatred and division. It has been a grand success for them in which they have convinced the vast majority of Republicans and not a few Independents that Democrats are immoral degenerates and the enemy to be vanquished and they are the true patriots and protectors of American values. We "came together" because the incompetent boob in the White House wasn't called out for his incompetence by the opposition party, who respected the solemnity of the moment. Had a Democrat been president, finger-pointing by Rs and calls for his/her resignation would have begun IMMEDIATELY. (There's also a good chance that the attack would have been prevented by a Democratic president...)

36. Tragically, I heard this with my own ears...

They are acceptable losses to some people because they have heard that it disproportionately kills minorities and old people. In other words, people who have been dehumanized and painted as takers rather than givers in our economy. Decades of the "welfare queen" and "medicare drain" mythical birds have come home to roost.
