August 24, 2020
By Sarah K. Burris
President Donald Trumps Postmaster General Louis DeJoy promised that he would stop holding the Postal Service sorting machines hostage if Congress allocated $1 billion to the USPS.
The moment came during a testy exchange between DeJoy and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA). DeJoy stammered and struggled to answer questions about why the machines were taken offline, saying that they werent helping and it wasnt what was slowing down the mail. He said that sorting machines were taking up too much space and thats why they were removed. Prior to the sorting machines being removed, there wasnt a slowdown in getting mail delivered. After, however, mail has taken considerably longer.
Khanna demanded to know if DeJoy knew how many veterans get their medication from the USPS. DeJoy didnt know. Its 80 percent, said Khanna.
He also demanded to know why Republicans demand the USPS to make a profit when the Department of Defense or the National Institute of Health arent told to make a profit.

(11,868 posts)Everything with them is a shakedown. This is a criminal enterprise running our government.
I would like to know who EXACTLY authorized the destruction and sabotage of these machines... paid for with taxpayer money... that you are now extorting more money from the taxpayer to correct.

(1,846 posts)I'll probably get hammered here for this, but after watching hours of both hearings, Dejoy does not strike me as dishonest.
I think the execution's been terrible, but I don't think he's lying. He sounds nothing like most of the Trump criminals I've seen before Congress.
Congress would be well served to subpoena the docs & people that resulted in removing the machines.
If he says it is a normal process, let's prove it.
Assuming it is a normal process, the idiots that approved it need to come under scrutiny for it's failings.
He is responsible for the trucks leaving empty, etc. changes, but as he's committed to reversing those kinds of policies, the focus should be on monitoring / reporting to Congressional committees.
Anyway, strikes me we need less hyperbole and more tracking.

(7,947 posts)That's not hyperbole.
He's a typical Trumpian grifter all in for the grift.
THAT'S hyperbole. (Just a little)
My thought is not on that stuff, but how things get done in large organizations.
You can look at any of the large corporate scandals over the last two decades and you will find dozens of low to medium ranked folks who knew what was going on and helped execute it for any number of reasons.
The guy at the top cannot make it happen without a lot of help.
As he is not evasive, answers the questions the same way over and over again, I think it would be instructive to go down a layer and get to the folks and documents that caused the execution of these acts.
It strikes me as a difficult task to come in and start removing that many machines in an organization that big in 60 days.
Let's subpoena these people who have no Trumpian protection...court has already ruled in favor of Congressional subpoenas.

(9,070 posts)seem to be well prepared to answer for.
My biggest issue with him is why he is outright refusing to even consider reinstalling the machines which he had no part in the decision about. He should at least say he is looking into this (he should have reviewed this before implementing any plan if he was a good leader).

(1,846 posts)that the capacity available on machines in place now is more than adequate to handle what mail they have now.
2 other things I have heard him say:
Drop in first class mail over the past several years has had a big impact.
Large increases in package deliveries necessitate changing how the postal facilities are run.
I say let's make him prove he has enough capacity.
Produce a report for each location that details:
1). Daily mail pieces handled that each location.
2). Daily capacity of operational sorters.
Seems simple to me.

(9,070 posts)I'm not disagreeing with your original assessment. However, I am not confident in his appointment and his management so far.
We need a lot less bluster and a few simple reports.

(9,070 posts)That never happens.

(3,577 posts)why did they not have new ones on hand to put to work immediately? A normal process would include replacements. That excuse is so lame.

(10,014 posts)The buck stops with him. If he didn't personally order the removal and destruction of USPS machinerary then he needs to find out who did and report that.
