Turning guns into garden tools
With an eye to DNC, faith activists hold a revival to call for social justice
[Shane] Claiborne is a cofounder of Red Letter Christians part of a movement among evangelical Christians who dissent from the conservative politics that have largely aligned white evangelicalism with the Republican Party, including Trump.
Red Letter Christians takes its name from the tradition of printing the words of Jesus in the Christian bible in red ink. Those words, Claiborne says, emphasize values and principles that evangelical leaders such as Jerry Falwell Jr. and Franklin Graham have all but ignored.
If our Christianity doesnt include welcoming immigrants, then we shouldnt call it Christianity, Claiborne says. If it doesnt include making sure that the poor have healthcare and that the hungry are fed, we shouldnt call that Christianity. And I think whats happened is a version of American nationalism that came up [calling] itself Christianity but it doesnt look much like Jesus at all.
I wonder why the folks in this story can't get any time on the teevee talk shows? Don't the media outlets thrive on "contrarian" points of view, and the controversy that follows, drawing in viewers? Here are some self-described evangelical Christians who aren't on the Trump Train! And they're beating firearms into garden tools and talking about welcoming the immigrant, feeding the hungry, and ministering to the sick. How contrarian! But not worth the media's time.
