(732 posts)Many years ago I tried to explain to my sister in law that SS is not a guarantee, that it can just go "poof". She was certain that it was a law or something that we had to get it. I said no its not, and if we don't fund it, it will go away. I then explained that what she paid in supported her mother, and what the kids pay now will support us. She still did not believe either thing, that it could go away and that what she put in was not "saved in her name" for when she turned 65.
