Axelrod on Romney: He's Not A Job Creator, He's A Corporate Raider

AXELROD: That's a big distinction between us and Governor Romney. He doesn't understand that that's a fundamental issue that is facing this country.

STEPHANOPOULOS: He also started to take some fire last night on his tenure at Bain Capital. And something you, Democrats, the Democratic National Committee, have really been hitting hard all through this campaign so far. He's not backing down at all. You saw him last night, Governor Romney saying his team at Bain Capital is responsible for creating 100,000 jobs. Do you have any qualm with that number?

AXELROD: Absolutely. Not me, forget about me -- every independent fact checker who's looked at it, including the Associated Press last night, after the debate, said he can't back up that number, and his campaign has conceded --

STEPHANOPOULOS: He says that net-net--

(CROSSTALK)

AXELROD: I know he says it's a net-net number, and he said I'm a numbers guy. The problem is that neither he nor his campaign can furnish any evidence to support that.

But let's talk about Bain and let's talk about what it was and what he did. His partner said in The L.A. Times, our job was not to create jobs, our job was to create wealth for our partners. And here's what they did. They closed down more than 1,000 plant stores and offices. They outsourced tens of thousands of jobs, and they took 12 companies to bankruptcy. And on those bankruptcies, he and his partners made hundreds of millions of dollars. He says this is the real economy, this is the model for the country. I don't think those are the values that people want to animate our economy. He's not a job creator, he's a corporate raider. Those aren't the values that we want to lead our economy.

This is the problem with Democrats. We don't have the discipline to keep using the same phrase over and over until it sinks in.

right wing plutocrats since the late seventies. Apparently, George H. W. Bush made money the same way and his family have followed in his footsteps. The only reason they get into politics is so they can manipulate the regulatory agencies in order to make this way of getting rich easier.

I believe it's criminal and they should all be in prison.

Maybe a Gordon Gecko. At Bain, he moved weathly clients money around to "game" the system. Similar to what happened during the financial crisis. The financial crisis did major economic damage all over the world. A lot of us got hurt, but those at the top made millions. It's Not illegal, but it's unethical. He had no regard what happened to the employees of those companies. Romney gave himself a nice "golden parachute" when he left Bain in 96. This brings him millions even though he doesn't work there any more. He is a pompous asshole pretending to be pias. I suppose if you aren't there to witness people getting thier pink slips, it never happened. He is one of the elite 1 percenters. I don't know why people think this guy is gualified to be president. Because he says the right things at cocktail parties? He is out of touch with realitly and really has no compassion to the middle class and the poor. He won't release his tax returns because you and I pay more taxes than he does. He pays 15% capital gains on that money. There is nothing good about that guy. I have to work for a living and I never bankrupted anyone and I pay more in taxes (percentage) than Romney. Romney is part of the problem not the solution. I would say vote for him, if you want things to go back to the way they were under GW. The only thing I will give him credit for is that he is not stupid. He knows how to screw the poor and middle class while raking in millions for himself.

I think Huntsman is their best candidate. They are all alittle bit nuts, but he is the most sane. It's a tough choice. This is the party that doesn't want people to have affordable health insurance. This is the party that wants the president to fail. This is the party that doesn't want the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to even exist. I think their days are numbered. The only thing that scares me is the dirty GOP campagn coming this fall with unlimited financial backing. I think they are going to again lose the presidency and some seats in congress. They put their foot in it too many times.

What Axelrod said is the correct term - unless you prefer the term "Corporate Vulture".

That he may have been playing money games is secondary to the plant closures and job losses which are known and indisputable facts.

If you have money in the market. This is how it's made. Well, that and exploiting third world labor, destruction of the environment, extinction of species, military weapons systems etc. You know, the kind of things that many people I know love to rail against but don't seem to mind when they are reflected on the mutual fund financial statement.

Especially since you know that both right and the libertarian faux left will push the meme that it won't make much difference if Obama loses to Mitt in the general. Mitt winning will be worse than the Bush 2004 victory, because ot will show thay we can be angry at Wall Street, and STILL send a corporate raider to the White House.

19. "our job was to create wealth for our partners"
Mon Jan 9, 2012, 09:05 AM
Jan 2012

Don't ever let them get away with saying they create wealth (for anyone), or that their job is "to make money".

That's not what they tell the rest of us to let them have a free hand. They tell us that their job is to ROUTE money.

That's how it's supposed to work in Free Market Utopia, isn't it? If you have excess wealth, don't just hide it in a safe or mattress, invest it in the market. They pool it with other peoples' excess to support new ventures. To more efficiently route it to the people who do create wealth. In return the investors get a piece of the action, and the financial guys sort through all the possible investments. That's where they add value, and charge for the service.

But that's (relatively) hard work, and the payoff can be uncertain. It's much easier and surer to simply REDISTRIBUTE WEALTH into your own hands. Liquidate company assets, squeeze employees, cheat customers, and funnel the wealth that someone else had built into your own accounts. As far as you're concerned, what's the downside?

And you get to call yourself "pro-business" for doing so.
