General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe are seeing, in real time and broad daylight, how Democracies can die.
The toxic combination of those with authoritarian personalities (they want to be led, to be told what to believe - due to fear, or brainwashing).
Decades of propaganda with very little counter efforts - endless right wing hate radio and hate TV, frothing up and brainwashing the watchers and listeners and forming the cult
A monster who is the master of snake oil and manipulation, a reality TV empty suit, preying on those who he actually shits on - but they worship him because they see themselves in him - he loves them, cares for them, tells them to fear "the other"
Lies - propaganda - lies repeated and repeated and repeated
A media who is out of its depth and for nearly four years has been incrementally normalizing what we are seeing - because they are chasing eyeballs and ad dollars, and also because they are in the high income bubble - they are conflicted. Just today - in analysis on CNN, Slate and 538 - we see "well, we set the bar low but it actually wasn't all that bad" and "the production values were better than the Democratic convention" kind of talk. Drip, drip, normalize - as if this were a game and not a battle for decency.
Elections that have been stolen (always the republicans, of course), because they have no ideas - just simple slogans - and can't win on ideas - so they have to cheat.
And here we are, at an extremely dangerous time in our country's history, with countless dead being whitewashed - because "trump".
It is happening right there in front of us. An election in which there should not be a snow ball's chance in hell of republicans winning could actually go very wrong because of the above and more.
Yes, go vote - get people to vote - donate, get active. But - if this situation doesn't scare the shit out of all of us who are decent, thinking, empathetic, inclusive - you are not paying attention.

(32,017 posts)Democrats want to destroy the country!
And people believe this nonsenseas if we dont live here and love this country too.
The demagoguery I saw last night was over-the-top for American political discourse. The OP is right to be afraid. It was very ugly.

(36,487 posts)The GOP has been playing the long game while our side reacts. We are partially responsible for where we're at. We should have faced the reality of what the republican party has become much sooner (fascists). This didn't just happen the past 3.5 years. We should have fought back against hate radio harder. They are going to pull out all the stops this election. They will do anything to win. We must GET OUT THE VOTE. Our country depends on it. Our future depends on it.
I think some, especially older Dems still think there are Republicans we can find common ground with. The 80's are long gone.

I remember bush talking like this about terrorists abroad to some degree, ubt it was over there, not down the street. And ALL they want to do is gin up their big apocalyptic race war...get yer guns, ma!
Omg it's sickening and terrifying. Protestors need to be careful, thank goodness they are still out there...

(1,822 posts)The meme that Democrats are trying to destroy America has been perpetrated for over 25 years and its to the point that many of the true fundies really believe it, because to them, their version of America is America as it should be. Anything to the contrary is blasphemy. So I know plenty of Republicans that arent thrilled with Trump but think being ruled by a Democrat is far worse.

(4,104 posts)I couldnt sleep or eat for two weeks when Reagan was elected. The Republicans brought on the Christian Right and other nut jobs to consolidate their power, thinking they could control them. It took 40 years but the tail is now fully in charge of the dog.
