Via The LA Times:
The first night of the Republican National Convention averaged 15.8 million viewers on Monday, a sharp drop of 28% from 2016.
The audience figure from Nielsen was also below the opening night of last weeks Democratic National Convention which averaged 18.7 million viewers over the three major English language broadcast networks and three leading cable news channels. The audience for the Democrats on the first night of their convention was also down about 28% from 2016.
Trump demanded a blockbuster convention after seeing the wide praise that the Democratic Party earned, but instead, the first night of the Republican convention was an event that alternated between dull and insane.

Obviously the RNC is not a blockbuster, but it isn't quite a flop as watching TransGuide cameras (The Texas Dept of Satety traffic cameras)

(25,437 posts)He's already president, so voters know what to expect.
3 million less is about what I would expect. I can't read anything into it.
I assume more voters would want to tune into the Democratic convention.

(588 posts)From the LA Times article:
"Fox News was the most watched channel for coverage between 10 and 11 p.m. Eastern, with an average of 7.1 million viewers, followed by CNN (2 million), ABC (1.97 million), NBC (1.7 million), MSNBC (1.6 million) and CBS (1.5 million)."
So dis-regarding the 7.1 million Fox viewers, the rest of the general public wasn't as interested.

(1,178 posts)I'm surprised after that, that they haven't accused Nielsen of being "a biased organization paid for by the Democrats." Especially with how they think everything is a conspiracy.

(34,857 posts)They had no significant speakers.
The DNC had Michelle Obama on their first night. So, that alone would have been a significantly larger draw than any of the GOP speakers.
Tonight will be more interesting with Melania speaking compared to night two for the Democrats where Jill Biden spoke.
To be honest, I suspect the RNC will draw more for night two than the DNC did ... but who knows? Wednesday should be blah for the RNC as the Pences speak - compared to the Wednesday where Harris & Obama spoke to the convention.
