Kentucky Man Accused Of Breaking Canada's COVID-19 Rules Faces $569,000 Fine

https://www.npr.org/2020/08/25/905847150/american-man-accused-of-breaking-canadas-covid-19-rules-faces-560-000-fine

A Kentucky man accused of breaking Canada's coronavirus rules — twice — could be forced to pay a $569,000 fine ($750,000 Canadian), spend up to six months in prison, or both.

John Pennington of Walton, Ky., was initially fined $910 ($1,200 Canadian) on June 25 after an employee at a Banff hotel where he was staying suspected he was violating Alberta's coronavirus regulations, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Tammy Keibel told NPR.

Pennington was told to stay in his hotel until leaving the next day. But the following afternoon, police spotted his car at a local tourist attraction, and he was arrested and charged with violating Canada's Quarantine Act.

Canada closed its border to Americans on March 21 to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, but Americans can still enter the country if they are going to or from Alaska. Some Americans are reportedly using the loophole to cross the border into Canada and stay there.

That includes douchebags emeritus in nursing homes who have to be medicated out of assaulting the staff and other patients and douchebags in training who are raised by dimwits who confuse bullying with strength, egocentrism with individuality.

Sad, isn't it? Since it's easier to tear things down than it is to build them, that's what they're going to spend their lives doing.

Canada has had about enough of us, they view us as the tweakers downstairs in an apartment building. I've been reading their gleeful reports of huge fines and prison for USian scofflaws for some weeks.

The moron in this story should get some jail time and be encouraged in the politest way possible to rethink the course of his life. Or they can impound his car as partial payment of his fine and let him walk back. Go ahead, Canadian friends, we're sick of them, too.

(The only thing I ever had against Canada is that their quarters won't work in vending machines)

Some places don’t indulge that “Nobody’s going to tell ME what to do” attitude that some Americans possess. That’s not an attitude you can afford, unless you’re a wealthy millionaire.

Some—thankfully not all—Americans feel entitled to do anything they want in another country because they paid money to get there. That priceless sculpture in a museum was just made to lean on for a photo! Some Asian tourists, especially the younger ones, monopolize tourist attractions for endless selfies. When on a tour of the Vatican, I actually had Asian tourists physically shove me and members of my group aside so they could catch up to their group. No excuse me, no words in any language. I doubt they mean to be seriously rude. I suspect that they live in very crowded cities where the only way to get around people is to move them out of your way.

When I first traveled to Europe many decades ago, we were all labeled as Ugly Americans for the boorish behavior of some. I still recall a couple I met from somewhere in Ohio who complained loudly about how terrible the food was. They were incensed that they couldn't get a decent hamburger, specifically, a McDonald’s hamburger and fries! I could never understand anyone who traveled to Europe and ate only in US fast-food restaurants! They had better food then, but there’s a lot of wonderful food out there to try!

I hope the Kentucky guy spends some time in jail. He and people like him spread the virus because they refuse to take any responsibility for helping to stop it. If Trump is reelected, people like him will just get worse, as will Trump himself, and we will not see an end to the virus for years. The NYT had an article yesterday on the vaccines being developed, and they’re all focused on preventing one from contracting the virus. Unfortunately, they’re not focused on also preventing the transmission of the virus so those who can’t or won’t get vaccinated will still spread it around the country.

When we were in Ireland, it was the German tourists who wouldn't follow the rules. We went to the Cliffs of Moher, which were too crowded to begin with, but there were areas that were cordoned off with specific signage not to get too close to the edge, and the Germans were climbing over anyway and taking pictures. This was within sight of a memorial to all the people who had died there.

I suppose the people who work there get tired of policing this, but it really ruined it for us, we had to leave because we didn't want to see anyone tumble off the cliffs and die.
