Tesla on autopilot rear ends police car while 'driver' watches a movie

A North Carolina doctor on his way home from work rear-ended a police car while watching a movie on his phone and trusting his Tesla to drive itself, according the Smoking Gun.

Police near Raleigh, North Carolina, had no trouble finding Devainder Goli shortly after midnight Wednesday when his vehicle allegedly hit a Nash County Sheriff’s Office patrol car, which then hit a North Carolina State Highway Patrol cruiser.

Those squad cars were stopped along Highway 64, where the officers who drove them were standing nearby, responding to a previous accident. Both cops were reportedly knocked down, but not seriously injured.

The 66-year-old emergency room doctor was watching a movie on his phone when the crash occurred, according to police. He was charged with watching an electronic viewing device while operating a motor vehicle. The Tesla was reportedly in autopilot mode.

If the expectation is that self-driving cars must have zero collisions ever, then you're right, they have a ways to go. Meanwhile, cars with human drivers are causing the deaths of tens of thousands of people a year in the US.
