GOP embraces 'law and order' while downplaying pandemic: 6 takeaways from Trump's convention

President Donald Trump unleashed a harsh series of attacks against Joe Biden Thursday night, casting his Democratic opponent as “the destroyer of American greatness” and framing the November election as a bitterly divisive clash between two irreconcilable slices of America.

“This election will decide whether we will defend the American way of life, or whether we allow a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it,” Trump said in a 71-minute address accepting the GOP nomination.

Trump’s sweeping address capped a Republican National Convention that veered between a fusillade of incendiary attacks meant to rouse the president’s base and targeted stagecraft designed to improve his standing with voters of color and suburban women.

The president delivered the speech from the White House South Lawn adorned with large campaign banners and before an estimated crowd of 1,500 with few masks and limited social distancing despite the ongoing pandemic. Democrats charged it was not only unsafe, but an illegal abuse of taxpayer funds.

Nixon:
1) Promote Law and order
2) Opponents are dangerous radicals= violent protesters
3) Opponents will ruin America

Nixon won by 20% against McGovern, so it worked 50 years ago.

and McConnell. They are working in concert to destroy what is left of the middle class and the poor can just die.

I need to work on negotiating the stairs outside the apartment. I don't have a lot of upper body strength so bumping up the stairs is going to be a challenge. At least I beat the infection and I'm continuing to take antibiotics.

One of the biggest challenges has been to rearrange the furniture to create gaps wide enough to move the wheelchair through. Doing well though.

I did pick up the thrust of their message through clips and articles written post-convention. Yes, the Law&Order/radical left schtick was front and center. The 'sleepy Joe' meme and/or the cognitive dysfunction memes never picked up steam. The main club, however, was and will be civil unrest, images of smoldering cars and boarded up business fronts, the specter of mob rule.

It's a message based on raw fear--be afraid, be very afraid.

What I think the Biden team must do is dilute the message immediately. This is Trump's America. On Trump's watch this is where racial injustice and police brutality have increased, where vigilantism is celebrated, where indifference has become the norm and violence has been incited by reckless rhetoric.

Along with the on-going Covid disaster and the economic fallout, Trump and his cronies are responsible for all of it, everything happening in the now. That message has to be pounded again and again.

Trump's America, a place where the darkness threatens to swallow us whole.

Read everything he ever says in a mirror.

He tells the truth.

Always. Just not in the way you think.

"The election is rigged, that I can tell you." he said it over and over in 2016. He was telling the truth. Russia was rigging the election FOR HIM.

There are millions of examples.

His patently obvious lies are truths because they are projections and admissions, out loud, of his guilt.

He lays it out before us all the time.
