Former NFL player Brandon Marshall was trying to move into his new home.
Security called the police.
His net worth is an estimated $18M
His scared children were in the car. It never ends...

(53,788 posts)That doesn't happen to white people moving into their new house.
Ms. Toad
(34,075 posts)that he tell them to get off his property.
By choosing to move into a gated community, he is choosing to have security guards on "his" property for the express purpose of exluding people who do not live there or are not invited guests of those who do. That's kind of the point of most gated communities.
I'm sure you are correct that they would not have acted the same way had the community list not been updated to include the name of a a white move-in. I was not responding to that.

(34,075 posts)My point was that security wasn't called - they were there at the gates to the gated community where he purchased a new home but was barred from entering beause he wasn't listed as a community member.
Security called the police.

(6,265 posts)shot many times in front of his kids and oops, they made a mistake. 400+ years of this shit and counting. If a person is black in this country they are THE target of every racist out there, whether police or civilian.

(15,286 posts)It would seem so if your name needs to be on a list, presumably of residents or members, and there's security to enforce it.
Marshall should not have immediately flown off the handle, though.
When I moved into my condo, I had to meet with the Condo Assn officers and read all the rules before getting their sign-off on my sales agreement. When I sold it 8 yrs later, the prospective buyer had to jump through the same hoops. It's possible the real estate agent didn't quite cross all the t's and dot all the i's before Marshall tried to move in.

(31,261 posts)because if it wasnt, it looked like nothing more than a fancy trailer to me. If that was the residence building, I wouldnt want to live there, it looked like upscale trash.

(15,286 posts)HOAs (home owners associations). Condos have condo associations. They have rules.
The condo I lived in was small and the rules were lightly enforced, if at all. It was the perfect fit for I wanted at the time.

(10,803 posts)But had you not done that beforehand do think they would have called the cops on you?
Ms. Toad
(34,075 posts)His name was not yet on the community roster, which is why they barred him and called the police.
It would seem odd that after he had already purchsed the home that he wasn't placed on the community roster - and I think it is unlikely that they would have treated a new white owner the same way.

(15,286 posts)A BSO (Botanikal Weston) spokesperson said deputies were called to the community on August 17 around 4:15 p.m. The deputies didn't write a report.
"The incident was resolved on scene between the two parties," a spokesperson explained in an email.

(28,477 posts)Marshall had every fucking right to fly off the handle when he did. He just bought a home in that community, possibly paying cash, and had the cops called on him because he's a Black man with dreads. Bet you thought Coloin Kaepernick shouldn't have taken a knee, either.
Waiting for your predictable response:
"I don't have a problem with Black people protesting, but they shouldn't protest THAT way."

(18,486 posts)These black people need to stop jumping to conclusions. If only we were more patient and just politely produced our papers whenever any white person questioned our right to occupy the same space that they do, we wouldn't have so much racial strive and division in America ...

(6,265 posts)and he shouldn't have felt the hate of the security guard either, I guess. Oh, he was so wrong to not act as you would have per your explaining of how he should have responded. Is that what you're saying. Yep, the realtor was at fault here and Marshall was the perp by "acting out" and being offended, right?

(33,643 posts)Glad the cop is a seemingly friendly POC otherwise it could've gone worse for Brandon.
FYI as there was two Brandon Marshall's in the league until recently ... this was apparently the Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall, not the Linebacker Brandon Marshall.

(3,635 posts)pushed by the populist left is bullshit. Lots of well-off blacks and browns get shit on (in ways big and small) by the white supremacist system every day, almost as much as middle and lower class blacks/browns do. 'Identity politics' (social justice) is not some hollow vanity project but really about human rights.

(11,949 posts)Hope those 2 goons are soon looking for a new job. They had a choice. Call the housing company so work it out or call the cops. They chose poorly.
DeminPennswoods
(15,286 posts)they stopped an unregistered person from entering a gated community. Posted a link above to a story that the situation was resolved "on scene", presumably meaning the problem was corrected and Marshall was able to beging moving in.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)I'm quite sure they would not have done this to a white person.
And no, they don't get the benefit of the doubt. My benefit of the doubt goes to the black man whose life they endangered by calling the police on him for being where he had every right to be.

(49,389 posts)It stands to reason, this man just didn't turn up with his kids to enter a gated community if he had no business being there.
The two security dummies at the gate unnecessarily escalated the situation by calling the local police.

(652 posts)Marshall spoke with 7News about the incident on Thursday.
The reality is, people fear our skin. Thats the reality, he said. Like, just moved into a new house, and all I asked the guy was to call the front desk, cause literally just got our keys.

There was absolutely NO reason for the guard to call the police.

(6,265 posts)and those two zimmerman clones. Yeah why call the police? Call the Association. Goons, probably trumpers.
