NJ-02: Amy Kennedy raises $100k online around Van Drew GOP convention speech
A nationally televised address by party-switching Rep. Jeff Van Drew to the Republican National Convention on Thursday night turned out to be fundraising boon to his Democratic opponent, Amy Kennedy.
A spokesman for the Kennedy campaign said they raised over $100,000 in the last two days, with more than 1,100 online contributions connected to Van Drews speech.
That gave Kennedy, a mental health advocate and former public school teacher, the single best fundraising day since she launched her campaign for Congress on January 6.
Van Drew was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 2018, but bolted for the GOP last December after refusing to support the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Kennedy, who won a five-way race for the Democratic nomination last month with 62% of the vote, was quick to jump on Van Drews brief moment in the limelight.
My message to the people of South Jersey is
dont be fooled, she said after his speech. The truth is that Jeff has changed. He made the choice to abandon the people of South Jersey to serve his own political career instead of the families he was elected to represent.
