NORAD NEWS NORAD conducts three intercepts of Russian aircraft entering Air Def. Identification Zone

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo., Aug. 28, 2020 —
North American Aerospace Defense Command F-22 fighter aircraft, supported by KC-135 air refuelers, intercepted three groups of two Tu-142 Russian maritime patrol aircraft that entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone late last night.

The Russian aircraft loitered within the ADIZ for approximately five hours and came within 50 nautical miles of Alaskan shores; however, remained in international airspace and at no time entered United States or Canadian sovereign airspace.

NORAD employs a layered defense network of radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to identify aircraft and determine the appropriate response. The identification and monitoring of aircraft entering a US or Canadian ADIZ demonstrates how NORAD executes its aerospace warning and aerospace control missions for the United States and Canada.

“Our northern approaches have had an increase in foreign military activity as our competitors continue to expand their military presence and probe our defenses,” said General Glen D. VanHerck, commander of NORAD. “This year, we’ve conducted more than a dozen intercepts, the most in recent years. The importance of our continued efforts to project air defense operations in and through the north has never been more apparent.”

By international law, they can fly anywhere that is more than 12 nautical miles from the US shore.

Air Defense Identification Zone and the USA's airspace are two different things.

Having no knowledge of if this is “normal”, it’s rather a red flag in my brain considering the megalomaniac freak in the White House would hand over the keys to the front door and offer a cocktail to pal Putin before raising a finger to help any citizen of our nation.

It was quite common during the Cold War, died down some when the Soviet Union Collapsed, and started back up when Putin came to power. Sometimes they skirted our airspace, sometimes they loitered around outside of it, other times they would fly straight towards it and peel off right before they crossed into our airspace. We did the same thing and NATO did the same in Europe.

I was aware of occasional testing of airspace by all, I just didn’t know how normal it was that 6 aircraft for 5 hours
Happened.

There is so much insanity bombarding us at this point from all directions, it is wearing down my brain and physically taking a toll. Some days my normal, quite reasonable “don’t panic” genes take a little survival respite and I get a flash of...I dunno, fear, surrender, disbelief, rage, numbness that just overwhelms until I BREATHE, just BREATHE.

I wasn't in the Air Force, and was 6 years old when the Soviet Union collapsed. But I know the reasoning behind these probes is to generally gather intelligence, such as response time, what aircraft they send, how many they send, what they are armed with. The jets also could be equipped with electronic intelligence gathering equipment so they can intercept and analyze radar information, radio traffic, or even take photos. So loitering for that amount of time may be the norm for intelligence gathering.

to fear monger. His BFF Putin orders this type of stuff, IF TRUE, to take the heat off his BFF to make it look like trump is a strong defender of America. Please!!! What a joke these two are.
