https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/house-schedules-historic-vote-on-legalizing-marijuana-at-federal-level/House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) announced on Friday that lawmakers would be voting next month on a bill to decriminalize marijuana federally, leaving regulation up to the states. The vote would mark the first time either chamber of Congress ever voted on decriminalization of marijuana.
In a Friday email to lawmakers, Clyburn said the House would take up the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act, first introduced by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), which would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act. The MORE Act would also expunge prior marijuana-related convictions, and impose a 5-percent sales tax which the federal government would reinvest in communities harmed by the War on Drugs through the creation of an Opportunity Trust Fund.
This fund would include grant programs administered by the Department of Justice and the Small Business Administration to support individuals who have been adversely affected by the War on Drugs, provide assistance to socially and economically disadvantaged small business owners, and minimize barriers to marijuana licensing and employment, Clyburns email stated.
Rep. Nadler, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, previously introduced the bill in committee last year where it passed by a 24-10 vote.

(13,107 posts)I have been out for 2 months.
I would love to be able to grow my own cannabis without risking having everything I own confiscated
by corrupt cops and state government.
I am 67 and I am tired of waiting for this country to stop the demonetization of this plant.
When I use cannabis it gives me a sense of well being, it makes me happy, and it helps me sleep.
It is a crime against humanity that it was ever outlawed.
Millions have died and had their lives ruined because the U.S. bullied 110 countries in 1937 to
outlaw cannabis.
Anyone who is against this is either sadly uninformed, will profit from keeping it illegal, or
an outright liar.

(17,549 posts)There is a private commercial operation that grows pot by the ton, out in the open and with the blessing of the government. The business benefits rich investors, most likely good Republicans.
If I grew two plants in my back yard, for my own consumption, I would be a criminal.
I can't see the "law and order" Republicans voting to decriminalize pot. Perhaps in January.
