Edwards: Three P5 conferences playing 'not a good look' for NCAA

(Snip)

The Pac-12 CEO group voted unanimously on Aug. 11 to delay all athletic competition until Jan. 1, 2021, citing a concern with the long-term health effects of COVID-19 and myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle usually caused by a viral infection. The conference’s announcement came after the Big Ten declared its intentions to not play football in the fall while ACC, Big 12 and SEC elected to play in 2020.

“Because they had an opportunity to make a decision to shut everybody down and they said, ‘Look, we’re going to go by your own conference and presidents. You guys decide,’” Edwards said. “They didn’t want to deal with the hot potato, so they stepped out and they kind of left it. And some people will say it’s political, depending where in the country you play. And some parents have gotten involved as well. So it’s a mess. Because there’s no order, right? In life, we like order. If everybody’s not playing and some people are playing and some people are trying to play in the spring, it’s just a mess.”

“I work in the Pac-12 conference, and our presidents and their chancellors, when they took the vote, it was 12-0 that we weren’t playing,” Edwards said. “So I’m just the head ball coach and I’m going, ‘OK, you’re telling us we’re not playing? I won’t get ready to play.’ Why those other guys are playing, I don’t know. I know this: I wish them luck. And I hope no one gets sick.

“I think this: I think they all understand there could be some stoppage in play if the virus hits your football team. And that’s the problem. It’s more than just playing the game of football. It’s, what’s it going to look like? What if you get a case on your team and your whole offensive line is gone? Who’s going to play? What if the offensive coordinator goes down? Who’s going to call the plays? So what is this going to look like? You’re fighting an opponent that you can’t see. And you don’t know when it’s going to end.”
