Nixon's remarks against Indians reflect his 'vulgarity', 'racism', say former diplomats
Richard Nixon opposed India in 1972 war, thought its actions would set "bad precedent", classified documents reveal
Nixon also calls Indians "most sexless", "nothing" and "pathetic", according to the tapes.
Third-rate, uncivilised, vulgar and racist. Those were some of the epithets former Indian diplomats used on Saturday to describe former US president Richard Nixon after his disparaging remarks on Indians were revealed in newly declassified White House tapes.
The comments reflect his anti-India stance driven by his preference for Pakistan, they said.
In a scathing response to the remarks made by the 37th president of the United States in 1971, former foreign minister Natwar Singh, former diplomat Mani Shankar Aiyar and former Indian ambassador to the US Meera Shankar also spoke of him being outwitted and out-maneuvered by Indira Gandhi.
The newly declassified trove of tapes provides startling evidence of the bigotry? voiced by Nixon, who was president from 1969 to 1974, and his national security advisory Henry Kissinger, Princeton professor Gary Bass has revealed in The New York Times.
