As for voting machines..

Should've never been allowed to be proprietary information of a private for profit corporation.

But that's what has happened, repug corporate owners made hackable propietory machines.

The corporation screams we own them if anyone demands to check how vulnerable they are to hacks or vote manipulation.

Just like corporations owning the press . The press is not free if it is owned.

development/maintenance of voting systems?

However voting systems are developed and run, they are subject to hacking and manipulation. That’s why we have poll watchers. Heck, ballot box stuffing was common in 50s and 60s.

We had a paper trail.

There is no paper trail with electronic machines.

Some things should not be made for profit.

Corporations can't own everything.

We have public television maybe having some news organizations not for profit might be good.

Profit is greed.

program, etc.? Is every state and locality going to hire systems people to develop, run and maintain things?

Point is, there is no perfect solution.
