Walked my dog at the park yesterday.
Asphalt walkway, 3 or 4 feet wide, in an oval around a grass field. Not a soul there was wearing a mask. This is problematic in my opinion, because you sometimes come in close contact with people at a park. I was wearing my mask.
Most people walk counter-clockwise around this trail, so I do the same thing. This reduces the chance that you will pass someone who is walking toward you.
This couple in their 30's or 40's were walking toward me. It was like a game of chicken. Which one of us was going to step off the path first to let the other pass while maintaining distance?
When we got within about 15 feet of each other, I gave up and made an exaggerated move into the grass field about 50 feet away from them, since they obviously had no intent of yielding or moving their dumb asses a few feet.
The woman in the couple laughs and yells over to me "You didn't have to do that! We would have moved"!
I yelled back "Yeah, but you didn't move, did you? It might be easier all around if you just wore a fucking mask, wouldn't it".
They looked at me like I had three heads. I don't care. I just don't care anymore. Fuck these guessing games. Fuck these people.

(4,846 posts)Wearing a mask isn't just about protecting yourself. It's about protecting others as well. If everyone wears one, no one have to guess. No one has to worry. It's about showing others that you are taking precaution.
Unfortunately, I have long given up about America being able to do that. The number of non-mask wearer would have been much lower if Trump wasn't the president. But he encourages them to not wear a mask. He has politicized the issue to the point that there is no way for us to do the right thing.

(8,168 posts)The path is about 6 feet wide, however, and I do try to stay upwind of people, but otherwise find it low-risk compared to, say, being here at work where I'm the only person who wears a mask. I've had kids practically run me over on their bikes or bump into me as they job past from behind, I find it frustrating though I have to blame the parents.

(17,460 posts)If someone is running or walking very briskly toward you, or really exerting themselves by riding a bike toward you, you need to think about more than 6 feet...it's more like 30 feet because of the volume of breath they are expelling due to exertion.

(8,168 posts)As I said, I am almost always planning a path that puts me upwind from others. This is outdoors so the odds are highly in my favor, especially where I live. The people getting sick are the people playing basketball 5-on-5, people going to bars, people eating indoors, people going to Planet Fitness etc.

(17,460 posts)I'll be 62 in a few months. 4 preexisting conditions, including kidney disease.
I'm outside all the time. Neighbors just walk right up to me. I'll be in the garden, and their unleashed dog comes right up next to me and pisses on a bush. Then I'll hear the neighbor screaming for the dog. then I'll hear footsteps It's the neighbor coming to stand right next to me and retrieve the dog, saying she's sorry as I'm trying not to trip by walking backwards.
I guess it's too hard to put a leash on the dog...too much trouble or something.
I'm sorry you can't be comfortable on your own property.

(1,400 posts)i had to threaten my regular guy w meeting my dog if he didnt leave the mail at the front of the walk, like i told him to, repeatedly.
now, i told him the dog wouldnt hurt him, and he wont. 120# fuzzball, but f w me, and he wont be happy. but the worst he would do is sit on the guy. told him- he wont hurt you, but f w me and he might make you wish you were dead.
he has seen him in the window enough times to know that he watches and sees everything.
he put a hold on my mail.
ditto ups cuz i called a driver a maskhole. told him to get a mask. he said- we arent SUPPOSED to wear them cuz we are outside. he said i swore at him.
my congressman is trying to straighten it out. but i do all my shopping online now. there are 2 checks, a couple of paintings, and quite a few packages from ebay of presents i bought myself for my bday. some fairly big ticket items.
