It's one thing when there is a real party on the other end. However in the last few months, I have gotten super fast talking recorded calls -- over and over. It used to be that I could tell a real person that I am not interested, do not call back, etc. I cannot seem to get rid of these llatest, recorded a-holes...especially the Medicare ones.
When I block the call, there is just a new similar number that calls again.
Anyone else getting this garbage and have any ideas how to make them stop this!

(17,989 posts)A couple of months.
I bought a phone that allows me to block calls. When it got to 100 the memory is full.
I now push the on button, then the off real quick. I am sick to death of them. Nothing works for long.

I despise them also and because of some of my community activities I don't have the luxury of just answering calls from people I know.
It seems like this is something both sides of the isle could get together on and fix.

(5,812 posts)I do some remote legal work for other attys. Their clients call to give me details I need and some don't leave VMs unless they have spoken with me before.
So...I answer and I get BS Robo Call again and again!!!!!

(3,131 posts)So do some spam calls but at least Im not answering directly.
There can be a technology fix to prevent spoofed numbers. At least smart phones could have a certificate that verified the number was valid. Half the calls already show up as potential spam.
I think phone companies would rather sell add ons so they and marketeers pay to prevent legislature.

(5,812 posts)They often do not wish to leave a message since some of the content can be sensitive. So, while it might be important, they wish to speak to a live voice and not record a message about some topics.

(3,131 posts)My job/life doesnt have that kind of issue. Any one calling me would at least feel comfortable leaving a call me back type message.
I can imagine doctors, teachers and others having the same issue

(29,098 posts)I can't seem to be able to block them as there is no number showing. I have Nomorobo on the cell and they aren't able to block it either. I finally just shut off all calls from people not in my contact list. It's inconvenient...but it's not ringing every 5 minutes. I thought the Do not call list was suppose to stop these. Sigh.

(14,061 posts)This is the only way to handle these pests, since Do Not Call registries are jokes.
I get a lot of calls with weird-looking area codes on my cell, not so much on the landline anymore since Ive blocked a lot of numbers. For the area codes that are familiar, if I dont recognize the number, I dont answer.
Whats scary is some of these calls do leave messages (which are cut off at the beginning) that involve credit card charges and money. How many people are taken in?
Tell me again how these calls are not abuses of a public utility?

(34,458 posts)voicemail for a local mom & pop business and I thought it might be a return call. I answered it and got a robot babbling at me in Chinese. WTH? Never again. I'll play phone tag, thank you very much.

(14,061 posts)For a bakery. Never heard of it, never went there...curious, I looked it up online, and while it was across town from me, the number was totally different from what my phone log said.
I have missed a few calls by not recognizing the number, but they either left a message or sent texts later.
I have no idea how telecommunications are being weaponized these days, and dont care to find out. Leave a message and Ill get back with you.

(5,812 posts)What is weird is that by accident I hit the number to call back and I got a gibberish reply that I needed to enter a valid phone number. What I saw was total gibberish.

(14,732 posts)a year and it's marvellous. It allows you to put a special ring on numbers that you definitely want to answer and disconnects robocalls after the first ring. It's called "nomorobo.com". Try it.

(1,000 posts)Something that should have be regulated out of existence many years ago. There should be NO exceptions! I had given up a phone for over 2 years because of the crap we would get. I now have a cell phone that only accepts calls from my family, known numbers.
Charities that make money off of cold calls only get a small percentage of the amount donated.

(1,399 posts)Preferred option is to not answer then call the number back. If its a legit number someone will answer. If you get a message saying youve reached a non working number (or someone who says theyve never called you) block it.
Another option is to pick up but then say silent and wait for the person on the other end to talk first; if you hear nothing its almost always a robocall or telemarketer.
A third option is to look the number up with an internet search before calling back. If the number is a scam its usually been noted as one on the web. Again, if its bogus block it.

(8,168 posts)The ones it doesn't, I simply screen. Only once has the caller been legitimate in the 2 years I've owned this phone.

(3,131 posts)Im not a security expert but there has to be a way for carriers to provide a certificate to me to verify I own the number for the call. It would probably only work with some smart phone at least until new flip phone hardware.
I should be able to tell my carrier to send non certified calls directly to voicemail or the bit bucket if the number used is certified.
The plus side is violators who spoof could he busted if they spoofed a certified number. Call volume on uncertified numbers could also be a flag to bust do not call violators. Put some teeth into the enforcement.
Ill look at nomorobo but this really should be fixed at the carrier level. I pay then for my number and I dont want insecure calls. Im afraid doing it as an after market add on will never be as good.

(25,563 posts)I don't know what you can do if you are in a profession where you need to answer all of your calls.
I'm a precinct chair, so I get calls from numbers that I don't recognize, so I answer them. Sometimes the number is often spoofed, as in "Jenny from the Warranty Dept", so it appears local. I feel for you because there really isn't a way to block them on your cell phone. What they're doing is illegal.
