New polls show Obama winning Florida, Colorado, Minnesota - losing Montana

Four new polls released over the last 24 hours show President Obama winning some of the biggest swing state prizes in the 2012 presidential race against Mitt Romney, but losing the smaller electoral state of Montana. The polls four polls were released by two separate organizations. Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic Party-leaning outfit, shows Obama ahead in Colorado and Florida. Another poll from the Star Tribune and Mason Dixon shows Obama up big on Romney in Minnesota. A poll from Mason Dixon, excluding the Star Tribune, shows Romney up big on Obama in Montana.

Florida is by far the most important swing state in 2012 given its 29 electoral votes. The poll from PPP shows Obama up by four points on Romney in Florida (50% to 46%). Many conservatives will immediately dismiss the numbers since they came from PPP, but Obama also leads by 1.9 points in the Real Clear Politics average of seven polls from the last two weeks. Even the conservative-leaning Rasmussen Reports has Obama up by two points on Romney in their most recent poll from Florida. PPP’s poll was taken from September 20th to September 23rd, which makes it the most recent of all the Florida polls.

In Colorado, which has 9 electoral votes, PPP has Obama up by six points over Romney (51% to 45%). Here PPP shows a much larger lead for Obama than the Real Clear Politics average, which has Obama with a 2.3 point lead on Romney (48.3% to 46.0%). Still, of the seven polls released from Colorado over the last two weeks, Obama lead in six of them. The more recent polls from the last week show Obama up by three-to-six points.

In Minnesota, with 10 electoral votes, the Star Tribune and Mason Dixon have Obama up by eight points on Romney (48% to 40%). Obama also leads by 8.4 points in the Real Clear Politics average of three polls from Minnesota. Obama won Minnesota by ten points in 2008, and it now looks as though Minnesota is certain to go for him in 2012 as well.
