recall that in 2016 that the open SCOTUS seat was a huge rallying point for right wing voters to come out in hopes of changing the balance of the court.
drumpf now has a rallying cause for his dwindling base, but if he cashes in that chip before the election, it is useless to him. he would actually garner more support by saying he's leaving the seat open, basically telling voters they better come out and support him if they want their right wing court.

Given, we will be energized too.

(7,447 posts)but it probably energizes women, minorities and LBGTQ more.
But I mean this is their shot, they are going to take it...and we aren't going to be able to stop it short term.
The only way to stop it long term is to win the presidency, get control of the Senate and then add seats.
They played hardball, now we need to.

(6,083 posts)Trump can't possibly win on votes, no matter what. He plans to kick over the game board. A SCOTUS packed with brownshirts might rule to let him stay in office.

(1,604 posts)If he leaves the seat open then his hard-core base will see it as a defection. Trump believes that there is a scenario where he can be pardoned by the Supreme Court, and if the election does come down to the wire, then it may be where it's decided.
I also think that the base coming out support argument is just as applicable to Biden's base, though most are already chomping at the bit to vote Trump out. Appointing a supreme court justice like Kavenaugh will bring out every blue voter in the country, and pretty much seals the loss of Susan Collins in Maine.

(25,183 posts)But we have one more thing that will need to be dealt with this fall. I can imagine that the election could turn into a shitshow, with ballot-counting irregularities that make Florida 2000 look like a cakewalk. Please recall that the SCOTUS had to rule on that outcome before it was all over.
At this point, the best we have is a tie vote, if Roberts gets squishy and joins the progressive side in the outcome of any election matters that get referred to the high Court. That increases the possibility of the outcome not being widely accepted, and Roberts will feel pressure to come down on the side of the troglodytes to avoid a split in the country. He's thinking about the role of the Court for a period of time way beyond the next four years.
Joe had damned well better win big in November.
