Is the death of RBG a tragedy? Absolutely.

Is the prospect of Trump and McConnell rushing through another uber-conservative Trump disciple to replace her horrifying? Yes.

Will any effort to prevent Trump's nominee from being confirmed involve a herculean straight uphill battle that will make the Kavanaugh proceedings seem civil and restrained? Without any doubt.

But, -------could we please stop the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments which implicitly CONCEDE this SCOTUS seat to the grinning nazis who began high-fiving each other as soon as RBG's death was announced? Nothing is "lost" until we lay down and stop fighting and I will be DAMNED if I will do that!

Do i have a "grand plan" guaranteed to prevent another "Trump Justice"? Of course not, but I believe we have some very capable people in Congress and I am positive that they will leave no stone unturned in their constant effort to postpone the confirmation until a new Congress is seated and a new POTUS sits in the Oval office.

I intend to support my party and its leaders in any way I am able and I REFUSE to listen to any of this "We are screwed! It's OVER!" bullshit!

We are right. We deserve to win. Let's get off our asses and get out our checkbooks and make it happen.

Even Chris Hayes on MSNBC is trying very hard to hold it together while he is doing his show. So please understand people are still shocked.

We will work together harder because without the presidency, senate and house, we won't be able to start fixing the damage that is Trump. We all know that as a fact.

I agree with you Atticus on this. We do need to do our best and give our all to keep a new Supreme Court justice from being confirmed until after the election.

if there was Kavanaugh wouldn't being on the bench right now.

Nothing legally prevents Trump from naming a nominee
Nothing legally prevents Mitch from calling a vote.
Nothing legally prevents 50 Republicans from confirming the nominee.

Short of 4 Republicans voting against confirmation (when zero did for Kavanaugh) there is absolutely nothing the minority party can do to stop it.

Now what we CAN do is win the Senate (and Presidency) and then get rid of the worthless filibuster completely and pass legislation to expand the Supreme Court from 9 to 11.

So if you want to do something donate to any of the close Senate races so we can pickup 3 Senators.

this seat until after the election.

Collins is in desperate straits and has in the past often joined Murkowski in straying from the GOP gospel.

Romney voted to impeach Trump and has made several remarks critical of Trump's character.

Is it impossible that another one---or two or three---Republicans will stumble over the tattered remnants of their conscience and decide that they do not want to be an accomplice to the psychopath who is about to be overwhelmingly rejected by the American people?

EDIT: As I typed this, Grassley has joined Murkowski in opposing filling the seat before the election.

But they're going to be given an opportunity to show us all who they really are. There are a lot of republicans in Washington that have been skating by with their relationships with their Democratic colleagues on the diffuse fumes of the collegiality of an era long past.

As well as shout down anyone who is going to get pissy at Democrats for "allowing" the republicans to ram through an ideologue. If trump has 51 sycophants to vote 'aye' in the senate, then he could appoint ivanka if he damn well pleases. If the republicans haven't stood up against him before, what makes people think they're going to start now.

in the event of a tie.

2.) Only hours after RBG's death and two Republicans have already publicly stated they will oppose filling the seat before the election (Murkowski and Grassley)

That's what makes me think other Republicans may "stand up" this time.

I am not saying this is not a treacherous situation and I understand we are the minority in the Senate. I am saying that there ARE things we can do which MAY prevent a Trump nominee joining the Court and that conscience requires that we make the effort.

If I'm Trump and McConnell, I'd suddenly develop a "sense of fairness" and say that the the seat should be chosen by the winner of the election. Then they fill the seat after the election regardless of who wins. That's what rotten people would do, so...

We need to win this election for RBG.

Fight for what you believe till your last breath. It is past time for many of us who sit in the stands yelling and cheering, to get out on the court and play the game. Democracy is not a spectator sport. I am more determined and motivated to fend off tyranny and authoritarianism then I have ever been in my life. Never give up and never give in. FIGHT!

We need to finish our fight and put a Democrat in the White House and everywhere else we can.
She tried as hard as she could to safeguard that seat for us--through four different courses of cancer treatment. We owe it to her to not give up. We are so close now.
