Replacement refs rob Green Bay of victory after bizarre last-second Hail Mary
The inevitable replacement ref disaster finally happened Monday night when the Seattle Seahawks were awarded a last-second touchdown on a bizarre Hail Mary scrum in which Green Bay Packers safety M.D. Jennings appeared to come down with an interception but had it stripped away and ruled a Golden Tate reception. That score gave Seattle an eventual 14-12 victory.
Tate had also blatantly pushed off a Seattle defender with two hands before making his disputed catch.
"That was two of the worst calls at the end of a football game that I can remember," an incensed Jon Gruden said on ESPN.
Call it what you want: A disgrace, a robbery, a pox on the integrity of the NFL. It all fits. Green Bay had a win stolen by replacement refs and by a commissioner more intent on a small part of his bottom line rather than the good of the sport. ...

(2,424 posts)I'm going to take the Teabillie road.
The outcome was in my favor and the official review confirmed it. Screw everyone else.
Anyone that thinks different is obviously a Communist liberal. The proof is right there in front of your eyes and careful review by the Supreme Court.......oh wait.

(592 posts)With further review of the situation... The regular refs are NOT on strike. They are being locked out by the owners as Scuba posted in this thread. It's the owners that are trying to take away what the refs already have... the refs are NOT asking for more money or compensation.
Billionaires Busting Unions again.
Makes me sick.

(592 posts)Lions v Bears early last season... Johnson clearly catches a pass ... sliding on his ass in the endzone .... he is palming the football with his huge hands and he puts it to the ground after his slide and he lets the ball go... they take the touchdown and the win from the Lions because they determined he was not through with the play... it was sooo bogus. With that... welcome to the bottom of the conference Pack... we will keep you company!

(36,437 posts)But seriously, two last play hail mary's caught in the same week (Lions and Seahawks). That's pretty crazy, because catching last play Hail Marys almost never happens.

(592 posts)The odds were off the charts for the Lions to pull it off....it is too bad the center wasn't on the same page as the rest of the team. All the Lions were trying to do was draw them off sides... not really hike it. Although I would have gone for the win and let their big back Leshour show his stuff and get the half a yard needed. Or fake the attempt for the first down and throw a TD pass to Calvin Johnson!
It was really a let down to end on such a blunder.

(53,475 posts)... the other way around.
It's cheapskates like Jerry Jones that want to quit funding the refs pension plan.
I really don't think they care about the money (~$60k / team) but they don't want to give a highly visible union a victory.

(30,481 posts)Jennings also screwed up royally. Football 101 in that situation. You knock the ball away. A guy making millions of dollars should know that you don't go for the interception in that situation. He had the opportunity to knock it down and instead wanted to pad his stats. MAKE SURE THE BALL HITS THE GROUND.

(46,192 posts)not like the NFL did much checking on them before pressing them into service.
and they aren't paid that much.
