The 2020 election is already underway in several states, but that doesnt mean the rules arent still changing. (Were tracking them all here.) In the past eight days alone, four important swing states have tentatively extended the deadline by which mail ballots must be received.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that ballots can arrive as late as Nov. 6 and still count as long as no evidence (e.g., a postmark) exists that they were mailed after Election Day (Nov. 3).
A state judge in Michigan decreed that ballots can be counted as long as they are postmarked by the day before the election (Nov. 2) and received by Nov. 17.
A federal judge ordered Wisconsin to count absentee ballots that are postmarked by Nov. 3 as long as they arrive by Nov. 9.
And North Carolina reached a tentative court settlement with plaintiffs that, among other things, would allow ballots to count as long as they are postmarked by Nov. 3 and arrive by Nov. 12. (However, the settlement still needs to be approved by a judge before it officially goes into effect.)

The corpulent creep isn't going to like this.

(7,715 posts)I am so hoping that the EV numbers for Joe are so great that any delay in any state past the night of November 3/morning of November 4 won't change his victory.
Otherwise, Infector Boi will create doubt as to the results at very possible opportunity.

(2,448 posts)have not been ruled on by the US Supreme Court. That ruling the night before the election moved up the due date by a week. The ruling also unexpectedly resulted in overwhelming support from Democrats coming to the polls on Election Day to support the liberal justice candidate. I personally had to hand deliver my ballot on Election Day to to a national guardsmen -which I gladly did.
Please vote early and make sure to use paper ballots. Republicans hate paper ballots because the have an audit trail - automated voting stations do not. Also, either personally deliver your ballot or verify that it has been received in enough time to remedy any issues.

(34,857 posts)Right now, Biden leads by an average of 6.6 points in Wisconsin.
That's about .34 points less than Obama in 2012.
Obama won Wisconsin by over 210,000 votes.
Turnout will likely be up, so Biden, with that percentage, would be up 220,000 votes or so with that margin.
Very improbable that there would be 200,000+ outstanding ballots that could come in.

(26,045 posts)So its conceivable that, even with those poll numbers, Twitler will be up by 60%-40% or more there on Election Night.

(8,337 posts)Will be a lot of those votes still counted on election day. But we hope that mi, pa and wi are not the deciders of this race again. If Biden loses FL and NC, it will be very bad. We will also know whether he does win on election day unless those states are super close. Ohio will also likely be an early call based on in person and mail ballots that are counted super early as well.

They're not going to put themselves in a bad position.

(8,337 posts)They start counting mail votes weeks in advance. They will release those counts as soon as polls close. Unless it is close, we will know who won North Carolina on election day, because the late counted votes aren't likely to make a huge dent to matter.

(34,857 posts)I get that there will be outstanding ballots for those who mailed their ballots on election day, or the day before, but at the margins Biden is looking at in some of these states, that would result in a 150-250,000 vote lead. It's hard to believe there would be 100,000 = let alone that many, outstanding ballots.

(1,086 posts)the more people get accustomed to the idea that we may have to wait the better. If it gets called for Biden election night that will make it even stronger.
