Romneyitis abounds

There was a candidate forum today. It was a special event to let members of the disabilities community meet and hear our candidates for local, state and federal office. There were probably 125 in attendance, at least half in wheelchairs; lots of canes, walkers and other assistive devices, and several oxygen tanks. The forum was moderated by a member of the press who has significant disabilities. Questions were generated by the audience. Each candidate got a few minutes for self-introduction.

One candidate in particular caused a few jaws to drop. In her intro moment she opined that she was born into a family that believes in service, so her involvement with disability issues "could be construed (chuckle chuckle) as a genetic disorder (tee hee)." Yes, she said that, to a room full of people that included some whose disabilities are, in fact, genetic.

Answering a question about transportation issues for those with disabilities, she ventured that we should resurrect the idea of Super Slab. Huh????

And she kept referring to the value of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps", totally ignoring those in the room without legs, much less feet to put boots on. "You people inspire me!" YOU PEOPLE. Then, after a few people spoke about experiences and concerns, she said this:

"You people know so much more than I do about all this. I really feel handicapped here!"

Did I mention that she's married to a failed teaparty senate candidate who solicited votes with the phrase, "Because I don't wear high heels"?

But one flying oxygen tank would do the trick. How can someone be so insensitive?
