(31,261 posts)away, but if Bidens ticket wins, Kamala would become President-elect and would take office on Jan 21, 2021. There would not be another primary season and no one would be substituted in, regardless of how many primary votes that person got.

(19,264 posts)Technically you don't vote for Biden. You vote for electors who have pledged to vote for Biden. Those electors can vote differently so if Biden electors win and Biden dies before the electoral college convenes in Dec they could collectively cast votes for Harris (or anyone) as President. if that person whomever he/she is gets 270 EV they are President. If nobody gets 270 EV (maybe the electors on the winning side fragment) then it is up to the House to decide. If the House can't reach a vote where a single candidate gets 26 votes (1 per state) then Pelosi becomes President.
However this has never happened before so it almost certainly would go to the Supreme Court.

(25,898 posts)As already noted, you don't ever vote directly for the candidates, only for the electors.
If that were to happen, at some point, before or after Nov 3, a new stand-in VP would be selected. Well, perhaps it wouldn't happen until after January 20, 2021.
It might be helpful to review what happened when Spiro Agnew resigned the Vice-Presidency October 10, 1973. It cleared the way for a moderate VP, Gerald Ford, which made the impeachment and resignation of Richard Nixon possible.
There is always a plan of succession.

(26,045 posts)No, if the nominees die before the election, the parties don't go back and award it to the next-highest vote-getter in the primaries.
And, sometimes, someone ascends to the presidency without winning a primary contest. For that matter, Gerald Ford became president without ever winning a nationwide election of any kind, only the one for his particular congressional district in Michigan.

IMHO, in that scenario, Beto should join the ticket with Kamala.
