Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy dear DUers - please get your flu & pneumonia shot. Make time. Just do it. You'll be glad you did.
I got mine today. My husband got his yesterday, plus the tetanus shot.
Nothing to it. I went through a drive through shot clinic.
Like my son said, we, as a family, might still get covid, but we're doing everything possible to keep ourselves and others safe.

(11,641 posts)I've had walking pneumonia twice in my life. I had to go to work today and it was a busy day. I'm feeling crappy tonight. I think it's the shot and not getting enough sleep.

(25,989 posts)Thank you for the reminder about tetanus shot. I will get one soon. Oh, yes, remember the shingles shots too. I got them earlier this year.

(17,338 posts)I believe the pneumonia shot is recommended after 65.
Unless there are other conditions. So 5 years to go.

(3,495 posts)Did you have any side effects after your first shiingles shot?
I'll get the flu shot after Halloween.

(17,338 posts)I dont know if it would have helped but someone told me to rub your upper arm a lot after getting a shot. The flu shot on my other arm was also sore, but went away sooner than the shingle shot. I couldnt even sleep normally on my side with arm under my pillow.
I have a very small frame (5 ft 95 pounds) that might have contributed to it.
Good luck, a few days of discomfort to ward off shingles seemed like a good plan. I waited about 8 months before second shot due to pandemic but Dr said that was no problem.
🙂

(9,127 posts)We went to Kaiser on Tuesday. They have tents in empty parking lots. Slid in. Poke poke. Slid out. Easy.
Just realized that sounds dirty. Meh. Im leaving it.

now. I'd strongly advise it even though I never had flu or colds much in my life.

(4,251 posts)to me last year - couldn't get out of bed for a week. I lost about 7 pounds.
I googled my symptoms last night and found they were not unusual which made me feel a lot better (I was scared I had Covid).

(4,251 posts)more cautious. We finally got a new battery, and I'm trying to do some freeway & distance driving.
When I retired I envisioned some sweet road trips. I'm just now looking at safe places to visit. Mid March is when I began my shelter in place. - last trip to the pool, last grocery shopping, last antiquing trip, last time eating out (take out only now). Thanks for your response & letting me know that this is not only my new normal, but our new normal.

While I'm not about to suggest that anyone not to get their flu shot, chances are this year will be essentially no flu at all. Which is excellent news all around.

(4,251 posts)I'm a strong proponent of vaccines, having almost died from the mumps as a child. And remembering my mother marching us all down for our polio shots asap.
There was a beautiful, talented ballerina (with many suitors) who missed her polio shot before going on her European tour. Here's a little bit about her:
Tanaquil Le Clercq (/lɛkˈlɛər/ lek-LAIR; October 2, 1929 December 31, 2000) was a French ballet dancer and principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Her dancing career ended abruptly when she was stricken with polio in Copenhagen during the company's European tour in 1956.
My family always hears this story when they start procrastinating about important things.

(8,781 posts)Almost no one in the US gets tetanus anymore. It is believed we are protected for life from our childhood vaccines. Ive read reports from 0 to 30 cases last year in US.

(66,468 posts)I've gotten so tired of having to arm-wrestle my patients best two-out-of-three just to get them to get their vaccines.
Stop wasting your medical providers' time with idiotic arguments dreamed up by Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey, and get your immunizations.
And bear in mind, any argument you continue to use against immunization will no doubt be moronic.

(3,495 posts)Thanksgiving. Here's the text of the email. He's located in So Cal.
"Dear Patient,
Many local pharmacies have started offering the flu shot. Please do NOT get immunized YET!
The flu shot is effective for approximately 3-4 months only, and it should be taken BETWEEN HALLOWEEN AND THANKSGIVING in order to give you maximum protection during the peak of the flu season, which is December, January and February.
Please also note that its not recommended to get multiple flu shots per season. Scientific studies show that getting multiple flu shots per season may result in lower antibody levels (and hence suboptimal protection), compared to getting only one shot per year.
Because of the COVID pandemic, it is especially important to get the flu vaccination this year, in order to avoid a double infection with flu and COVID, which could have disastrous consequences.
Best,
