Can Trump actually be prosecuted and imprisoned after he's president?

From what I understand, no US president before in history has ever gone to prison. Will Trump finally change this? Or are there going to be more backroom political bullshit that somehow lets him off free even after losing the elections?

although they certainly can, if the statute of limitations have not run. Though I have to say this is largely a Democratic tradition (to not charge/prosecute) and R's most likely would do so against a former Dem President if given the chance.

But, the issue of state charges is distinctly different. They can be brought and unless there is a governing political structure within a state where offenses were committed that is protective/averse to such charges being brought (or a statute of limitation that prevents), then state prosecution is not unlikely. Just because it hasn't happened, doesn't mean it won't. Few former Presidents are likely to have left themselves so open to corruption charges, both state and Federal as Trump.

Whether that actually happens remains to be seen. If the 'rona gets him, though, it won't matter.

Even impeachment and removal doesn't get officislsvoff the criminal and civil liability hook.

In practice, though, it's hard to imagine actual prison.

So many ways for him to delay things.
Even if we could get a conviction and prison sentence, he'd claim health issues. He'd have done this without Covid, now he's got a sure fire excuse no matter how this plays out.

Best case realistically is home confinement. Even that is hard to imagine.

As far as "can he?". Yes that is beyond any possible doubt. Any possible constitutional issues end on Jan 20 at noon. They could have an arrest warrant waiting and take him into custody as he walks out of the white house.

Will he be prosecuted and go to prison? He certainly should but I have my doubts.
