Smart Financial Centre will be used as mega-voting center in Fort Bend, officials say

Fort Bend County officials announced Thursday that Smart Financial Centre will be used as a mega-voting site for early voting and on Election Day.

“The best way to vote is in person,” said District Attorney Brian Middleton said at a news conference. “That’s why we want to have these large voting centers, so people can come and feel socially distant because this is one of the most important elections in United States history.”

The four-year-old, 200,000-square-foot venue in Sugar Land can hold up to 6,400 people. During the pandemic, it has also been used as a testing site for COVID-19.

Elections Administrator John Oldham expects the county to have nearly 400,000 registered voters before the Oct. 5 deadline.

“This election is definitely one of the most important, most challenging,” said County Judge KP George. “We are trying to do everything possible in Fort Bend County to make sure you have access and you could go and vote without any fear.”
