Post Trump infection polls show no "sympathy vote" bump for Trump

I've been hearing from some Republicans this weekend that Trump becoming severely ill due to his own stupidity and arrogance would somehow help his polling numbers. We've been told tales of a "sympathy vote" or rally around the flag kind of reaction to Trump being in the hospital.

Yeah, no. Some of the first polls out conducted completely after news broke of Trump catching coronavirus and how it has affected the presidential election are here. And they ain't looking good for President Superspreader. It is just two polls so far but any predictions that this would somehow help Trump are of course proving to be total fantasy on the part of the very desperate MAGA crowd.

Here's what the numbers say

ABC News: Has Trump been taking coronavirus seriously/did he do enough to protect himself from infection?

27% yes
72% no

ABC News: Are you concerned about contracting coronavirus?

72% before Trump infection
80% after Trump infection

Reuters/Ipsos: Has Trump taken proper precautions to protect himself?

Yes: 36%
No: 64%

Reuters/Ipsos: Is Trump telling the truth about coronavirus in general?

Yes: 34%
No: 55%

Reuters/Ipsos: General election

Pre-Debate/Trump infection: Biden +8
Post-Debate/Trump infection: Biden +10

In the Jimmy Buffet song "Margaritaville," the singer is famously wasting away again in Margaritaville. At first, he says it's nobody's fault. Then he concedes that it could be his fault, and finally concludes that it's his own damn fault for his condition.

The people have judged that Trump's condition is his own damn fault.

Though, I would say, he is not severely ill at least according to how they frame their message so far. Moreover, I would be curious if the "sympathy votes" would be more state based, red states will shore up their support while swing/blue states would not. And swing states might even move away from Trump if they are hit hard by COVID.

behind him now. And there might have been a tiny number of those who somehow were wavering about which man to vote for who are now going with Trump out of a misguided sympathy. But more of those "undecideds" are going to completely abandon any support for him. Whether they vote for Biden instead, or some other candidate, or don't vote at all remains to be seen.

If Trump were to pass away within the next few days, with Pence becoming the nominee instead or if the Republican Party selects someone else to be at the top of the ticket with Pence remaining in the VP slot, if that new nominee is seen as more acceptable, not as extreme as Trump, then things suddenly get more competitive. Even so, already over 3 million people have voted and returned their ballots, and the closer we get to November 3, the greater percentage of people will have voted.

there will be a loss of support. I don’t care how reptilian your brain is, eventually, on a self preservation level, the medulla oblangata says “Enough!”.

Honestly, I think they were able to dismiss Cains death as an insider because no matter what they say all blacks in the Republican Party are really just tokens anyway. Useful tools to be put away or discarded when their usefulness has run its course.

We’re getting enough white folks in power in this outbreak to make any deaths something they will have to acknowledge, ‘cause it’s been crickets about Cain since square one. Morbid, but true, we’re waiting for a death that counts for them.
