It's euphoric for a while until they wean you off them and reality sets in. If however you have to stay on them a lot of bad stuff can happen.

Hell of a thing.

(7,220 posts)There was a point that the hospital staff came to find me...they were trying to take mom to get some imaging done, and she wasn't having any of it. They led me to an elevator, and there she was, on a gurney, legs in the air and holding open the elevator doors. Poor bastards didn't stand a chance.
It was especially terrifying because before the transplant, she'd been a (relatively) normal, sane person. I didn't find out about the prednisone overdose until after several days of exasperated discussions with her doctors (who may or may not have overdosed her due to preoccupation with extracurricular "activities" .

(149,677 posts)You start off with a big dose and then every day after that, you are gradually weaned off the rest.
No euphoria at all. I was glad to get rid of the symptoms that had caused me to be put on them! That happened quickly; by day 2, I was unbelievably better.

(6,376 posts)Especially when the doc doubles ya up on those med-packs and you're first 2 days are like 8-10 pills and then you start weening off. Nuts.

(6,376 posts)My last steroid bout was almost 15 years ago but I put a lot of effort into keeping my distance from risk environments for just this reason.
And, by the way, if you think it's a trip when you start on the med-pack...try starting from a bolus shot in the a$$...you won't sleep for 2 days. lol

But not the seafood-themed set of serving dishes (that Ive never used). A friend went on a cleaning bingeup at 2 AM, detailing the stove. Crazy, but cheaper and more productive.
And then, weaning off--wow. Intense anxiety and mood swings. Really dont want that again.
I guess well see what happens with this national roller coaster--hes already got plenty of mood swings from his current pharmacopeia.

And this guy has trouble with all that even before he was on them.

(4,902 posts)I felt really manic, was ravenously hungry, and had a mild hallucination. Gained weight rapidly. A close friend said that I was pretty goofy while on it.

Plus he gave me some steroid pills to take if it got bad while on the trip.

Dr. Conley just said that POTUS has not been on fever-reducing medications for 72 hours. That is wrong. Dexamethasone is a fever-reducing medication.

(13,362 posts)It works like a charm in the short term, more than a week and you become more like a tweeker, mental agitation etc
In many cases, the actual thing it is supposed to help ends up rebounding worse after treatment.
I would know, autoimmune issues and lots of years of bouncing on steriods for acute inflammation episodes.

(6,252 posts)[unnecessary medical details] I've developed pretty severe arthritis from taking immunotherapy drugs for my cancer. My hands were so bad that I couldn't drive, couldn't cut food with a knife, could barely comb my hair. I was spiraling down into depression from the helplessness of it all. I went to a rheumatologist who said that my hands looked like I had had rheumatoid arthritis for five years, though I'd only had symptoms for five months. [/unnecessary blah blah blah]
After two days on prednisone the depression was gone. I won't say that I was giddy or euphoric, but it was a 180 degree change in mode. I thought that it was because the pain in my wrists and knees was gone and that I had a small improvement in the use of my hands, but y'all have convinced me that there's more to it than that.
Am I clear-headed enough to lead the country? Maybe, maybe not. But I'm at least self-aware enough to consider the question. And to continue to stay home and wear a mask on my few visits to the outside world.

(210 posts)I've been on steroids when my asthma has been bad. I think very hard about taking them as I am Bi-Polar with an anxiety disorder and I have found they definitely have an effect on my mental health. I can become quite manic and my anxiety can spike pretty hard. Its a misconception anxiety presents just as fear, it can also manifest as anger and agitation.
So, while I am extremely grateful for steroids when I'm having a bad asthma attack, I have to alert my mental health provider and support team so they can prepare to help monitor me for extreme mood and behavior changes while I'm on them.

(18,402 posts)Mr. Frazzled was on prednisone for about 6 months (infusion drip followed by 7 days of high-dose oral, every 3 weeks) for lymphoma treatment. He said the steroid effects were much worse than the actual chemo. He hated that part.
Cant imagine what dexamethasone does to your head.

First time for crippling arthritis. Also severe back pain more than once.

Also for poison ivy but nothing works fast enough for that.

(4,673 posts)my chemo cocktail. In my case, it was 3 days on, 4 days off, and nearly destroyed me. I begged my specialist to stop it. She did reduce the dose a bit but that was only marginally helpful.
Because of the lrge dose, I did not sleep at all for 2 nights. The 3rd night I collapsed from exhaustion. The next 2 I sank into zombieland, and by the time I was recovering it was time to start all over again.
The first day/night of the week would be euphoric. Like lots of speed for those who ever took it back in the day. I could clean the house, do a project, race around zoom zoom zoom. Then gradually downhill.
I rarely got the bad rage many did but remember one incident.
Was high on dex and in my car. Someone cut me off, not badly, but I got uncharacteristically pissed. I dont do road rage. Ever. But that day I decided to give a middle finger and thrust my outstretched arm/finger aggressively up out the moonroof except ... *ouch* .. it wasnt open! Oops.
Laughed myself stupid.

Other then feeling really well, I did not notice any physiological side effects. Further, no one around me told me they noticed anything odd about my behavior, other than my ravenous appetite.
That was several years ago, and I do not remember the name of the specific steroid(s) administered.

(2,750 posts)I swallowed a whole bottle of her fresh prescription of Valium or possibly Diazepam. She had a bad divorce and a nervous wreck at the time. Anyway, I took the whole bottle and my mom noticed me stumbling. I was probably 5 or 6 years old.
Long story short, I was taken to the hospital and my stomach pumped. Enough had got to my system that they gave me, if memory serves a steroid to keep me awake. Sleeping was a big no for the evening. Apparently I was up all night bouncing off the walls.
I'm assuming it was a steroid, anyway! What would doctors prescribe for an OD like that in a child?
She said it was a horrible night of guilt and madness. Keeping me from burning swathes of carpet out hotdogging all night was hell
