(13,539 posts)a republican. My husband worked at the post office processing center in a large city for over thirty years and many of the people he worked with were republicans. He finally retired and is so happy to not have to listen to their idiocy and lunatic conspiracy theories five days a week!!!

This way you know something's missing.
That's probably how this guy was caught. Someone called the postmaster asking for their lost ballot.
It could have also been the certified letter recipients.

If you have a good rapport with your postal worker, talk to them first. I felt bad afterwards.
My mailman says they really look at those numbers, and want to see it zero.

(6,932 posts)Even though we had a mail hold with a clear date to resume they never did. So a day or so later I just clicked on stuff I'd never received and it showed up the next day.

(1,040 posts)It's free, and we see every day what to expect in our mailbox. There have been a few instances where something didn't arrive, and a quick call solved the issue (for items much less important than ballots, certified mail, etc.).

(11,336 posts)And -- there have been (fortunately pretty infrequent) incidents similar to this down through the years. Upside -- with mail tracking (and other system checks) it's getting harder and harder to get away with.

(13,871 posts)But this person dumped certified letters. Since those are closely tracked, that probably means a good chance of getting caught.

(11,336 posts)these are surely "jumpy" times.
The whole USPS/voting thing bothers me a little bit -- specifically because I would expect any machinations and skullduggery against the election (if indeed it is happening) to be the work of management and executive level actions. Why on earth would we be imagining a bunch of union shop guys running around trying to sabotage the vote -- and elect Donald Trump? And, by so doing, further empower a party that has been attempting to GUT the Post Office for the last 30 years? Just doesn't seem very likely on the face of it. In fact, it defies credibility! Hammer DeJoy and his political lackeys all you want, but -- the guy/gal that delivers your mail every day is NOT trying to steal your ballot!

(11,990 posts)Yes, especially in these days of covid, I'd be just thrilled to receive my mail from out of a dumpster. I hope they at least put those recovered pieces inside additional envelopes before integrating them into the rest of the "mail stream."

(490 posts)Mail dumping occasionally occurs election or no election. You dont dump almost 2000 pieces of mail to get rid of 99 ballots.
