WASHINGTON President Donald Trump's vow to skip the next debate if it is held virtually delighted supporters but confounded observers who say he risks throwing away one of his last best chances to change the course of a race he is currently losing.
"The president's threat to walk away from a virtual debate is a power move that seems almost certain to backfire," said Liam Donovan, a Republican strategist.
"This debate may be the last best opportunity to score a game-changing moment or otherwise hope to impact the trajectory of this race before it's too late," he added. "It's also one of the few remaining speed bumps for Vice President Biden, and Trump would be doing Joe a real favor by letting him off the hook."
The non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Thursday it would hold the town hall face off virtually to "protect the health and safety of all involved" as Trump continues to recover from Covid-19. The president almost immediately rejected the plan.

If they can just click mute, that ridiculous "game-changing moment" has a zero % chance of happening. It's already nearly zero. Mute guarantees it.

(292 posts)He is not going to agree to a virtual debate because it would rob him of the ability to act like the complete buffoonish ass that he did last time. Interrupting; talking over Biden; never shutting up. Etc, etc. Not that any of that wins him the debate. It makes him look a jackass. But in his mind he associates such behavior with winning.
He also isn't going to seriously prepare for a legit debate on the issues. In a virtual debate where he was forced to actually answer questions and where Biden would be able to speak and answer questions in an unfettered manor I think he would look even more like a clueless idiot than he did in the first debate. He and his advisors know that too.

(7,447 posts)quite frankly, the more he's seen, the more damage he does to himself.
His best option right now, is to say as little as possible. Make a couple of appearances a couple of weeks from now to make sure folks know he isn't dying, and then just lay low.
He'll still lose, but his margin will be like 5-6 points maybe instead of the 10 pt margin he's currently working on.
