I'm a Michigander. I love my state. I know all of you come from beautiful states, but my Michigan is really, truly beautiful.
On August 31st, I celebrated my 10th year diagnosed with Metastatic Breast cancer. Back then it didn't look promising, but here I am. Ta da!
To celebrate I wanted to go to the UP (Upper Peninsula). So my son tossed me in the car, and off we went. Crossing the Big Mac (Mackinac Bridge) was wonderful!
I won't bore you about the trip. But I do want to tell you something.
I got the best gift.
We live in Northern Michigan. So from here, up North, and throughout the UP, we saw so many Biden/Harris signs and flags, it made me laugh and cry with joy! Of course there was support for Donald, and his waxed bobble head, but in comparison --- Donald barely seemed to be a thought.
Plus, I watched my neighbor rip up and toss out his Donald sign last week. Yesterday he removed his "My Governor is an Idiot" sign from his upstair's window (I guess yesterday's news reports got to him, dunno, don't care). But it's GONE!
That's all. I'm happy. Our little trip was wonderful, except this year, the color change is slow, and didn't see the beautiful reds and crimsons, but I got to see my beautiful Michigan and so many, many Biden/Harris signs and flags, big flags, too boot! Yay! Thanks for reading.

I was born in Michigan and have relatives from Detroit to Sutton Bay and Cross Village. Nobody in the UP but my mother always raved about UP.

(42,282 posts)Yes, Michigan is lovely and the UP especially so. We missed our usual September drive up for the Irish festival in Muskegon; it is always a time to see how your state has changed over the past year....y'all were hit hard with the last recession, but we watched as you made a comeback and cheered you on. It's also wonderful to see the beginnings of fall color arrive.
Yeah, you've had your share (and more) of stupid political choices...but you aren't fools and you do learn. Hopefully, you can say the same about us down here (and I never care about football, so let's just be happy Midwesterners together, ok?)
Glad you had a great trip!

(2,073 posts)Waving hi!
I was born in Flint, raised in a blue collar family. I left this state for a few years in my early 20s but felt a strong need to come back home. And I've been here ever since.
I LOVE my home state; it is so beautiful here. My mom was born in the Upper Peninsula and I have been blessed to have visited "up home" many times over the years.
Michigan is full of decent, hardworking people. There is no way in hell any of those fucking terrorist morons represent *US* (lest anyone think otherwise).

(36,307 posts)Travel US 41, US 2, M 28, M 26 and you will see lots of Trump signs compared to Biden signs.
Upper Michigan is deep red and we've only had 2 Dem Congressmen since the Great Depression. One of which lasted all of 1 term. The other was Bart Stupak who many here hated.
But i do think Biden will do better then Hillary did in 2016 and may even carry a county or two up here.

(32,688 posts)Have spent 50 of my 71 years here. Worked in a Detroit car factory for 30 years and lived in 13 different towns in South East Mi for those years. Now in the dead center so I can travel all over the state. Go to the UP once or twice a month to pick up cars and bring them back. Travel to Lansing where I have a booth at an antique mall. Go to AA and the West Side of D to see friends. Its great to be back.

(1,332 posts)I live in Grand Rapids and while Grand Rapids tends to be democratic, the surrounding
areas in Kent County are republican. Or, as I call it, trumpican. Walker, Wyoming, GR Two.,
Rockford, East Grand Rapids, we're surrounded, plus the small towns in rural areas, Sparta, Kent City, Marne, the Trump Pence signs are everywhere. And don't even get me started on Ottaw County, Allegan County and Newaygo County. I am just so glad we have the straight ticket back. I keep thinking if you've had to stand in line in the Detroit area for two
hours, it's so much easier to just fill in the Democratic circle and leave. This is the first year
we've voted absentee, we are very old (69 and 68) but mostly it was the Covid. What I wish is that Michigan had at least a week of early in person voting. I mean, we've had snow on Halloween before, you would think the weather alone...anyway, weather has been really beautiful this week, maybe load the dog in the car and take a short drive up north.

(5,229 posts)A Chicagoian, I spent many summers there. Gorgeous place, abundant produce and friendly folks. After retirement, became a seasonal resident. The militia folks have been around for 40 years, mostly irrevalent. Now it looks like they have been encouraged by POTUS. Take back your state folks, don't let the dummies win!

(14,909 posts)Visited Keweenaw, the Porcupine Mountains and sundry waterfalls and lighthouses amidst October foliage. Got the best pics at the Bishop Baraga shrine in LAnse. Got 5 days in from Hancock. Writing this from the Holiday Inn in Mackinaw City, halfway to home in Detroit.
My wife and I also thought wed see a lot more Dump flags. Our count was about Biden/Harris 50- Putins Fly 50. Thats saying something in the UP.
Most importantly: Congratulations on your good news, dmr!

(8,020 posts)it was the worst mistake of my life. Lived here all my life, now I will be spending the rest of my life trying to leave for good. Glad your're in a good place here but for me there is nothing here worth putting up with the cold winters, super high property tax, high priced auto insurance & rightwing nuts.

(34,402 posts)Grand Rapids to attend GVSU, and ended up working there until I retired in 2015. I live in Lansing now. I'm encouraged that northern lower Michigan isn't quite as red as they used to be. Granted, Charlevoix has always been more liberal, but then there are places like East Jordan, Boyne City & Mancelona that aren't.
Thanks for the optimistic report and I'm so glad you're doing well.
