"After news broke that a group had allegedly hatched a plot to kidnap her, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan said she received well wishes from prominent officials, among them Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
Also on the Michigan Democrats call log: Governor Charlie Baker. Whitmer, speaking in a CNN appearance Thursday night, specifically said Baker was among those who reached out to her, holding the Republican governor up as a contrast to President Trump, with whom she has feuded, including after Thursdays news of the criminal charges surfaced.
Id like to acknowledge Charlie Baker, the governor of Massachusetts, who called to check in on me, Whitmer told host Erin Burnett. Thats what decent people do. Thats what good American leaders do.

Yes, he is a Republican and my Governor. I never voted for him and never will. HOWEVER, once again I am going to give him credit where credit is due. This, now showing his decency calling Whitmer, his Covid response and refusing to roust our sanctuary cities. I will take all the help we can get right now. That includes Cindy McCain and LP.

(31,261 posts)They have the mixed up small government mantra that republicans have deep in their veins and they are somewhat suspect of issues like reproductive choice and LGBTQ fights, although they dont actively attack them. The thing that I fear is that they come off as reasonable and balanced, so they will attract voters that a DeSantis or Cotton or Cruz would repel, that makes it capable for them to win, even difficult states for republicans - but make no mistake, they setup Republican administrations, with all the inherent problems of that.

(63,221 posts)situation. He is very unlike most other republicans and he is a good man, even though I didn't vote for him. I do have respect for him and I think he is doing a decent job of handling the pandemic in this state. I only wish more republicans were more like him.

(297,763 posts)on Gov Whitmer of Michigan! I was thinking the same that I'm reading that she said about it.. "that's what decent people do".
I'm grateful she's getting so much kind support.. this FOILED Terrorist plot in Michigan holds special interest to me like a lot of people.
I can't believe the "Dem gov of Delaware pardoned Barry Croft last year"!
TY for this report, she

But Yay.. the Murderous Misogynistic Terrorists were Caught by the FBI because of informants & undercover agents.. & they already had their eye on the Stupid plotters.
How they were caught..
After abducting Whitmer, Fox allegedly said, the governor would be taken to a secure location in Wisconsin for "trial," according to the complaint.

(38,958 posts)The decent thing to do. Be willing to bet that the call log doesnt include anything from Governor Do Nothing of Missouri.

(1,123 posts)He deserves credit for this and his handling of the virus, but I also never voted for him and never will. I want Maura Healey to run, Jay Gonzales ran a pitiful campaign.

(83,937 posts)If I could have voted for her a dozen times, I would have.
She would make a great Governor.

(5,695 posts)He's done an okay job with handling COVID, but really hasn't done much else of note. Of course he's being graded on a curve, so in comparison to fools like De Santis or Noem, for example, he seems great. But yeah. there's no excuse for MA having a republican governor, other than force of habit. (need to balance Dem legislature with GOP governor...blah blah).
Green Line
(1,123 posts)He's reasonable, but still very much a Republican. He supported charter schools when they were on the 2016 ballot, he meets with Pence when Pence comes to the Cape, he goes on Republican retreats and he recently endorsed Susan Collins.

(67,782 posts)....other Governors did that, too?
Not surprised that Biden was one of the first to call her, too.
Baker is a good man, and a good governor, too. If I didn't know already, I'd never know he was a republican. He certainly doesn't act like your typical 21st century republican. And his response to the virus was great, lowering new cases and deaths a lot quicker than many other states.
We've got some really good governors and Senators in the region.

(83,937 posts)He has done okay and unlike Romney and Weld he is not AWOL. He is doing his job.
Also Trump hates him for not kissing his ass. That is a really good thing.

(111,367 posts)FWIW, I never really hated any GOP governors in Mass. I didn't and wouldn't vote for them, but none were outrageously terrible.
Bedrock Yankee Republicans are different, they're decent but wrong, and they didn't buy into Gingrich's tribalism.
I did vote for Ed Brooke back in the dark ages because his Democratic opponent was not a good one. I voted for Tsongas in the senatorial election after that.

(10,002 posts)In other words, a good and decent man who follows science and fact. They were once common in these parts, but the "Invasive Species" who overtook the Republicans nationally, have taken root here as well.

(17,989 posts)Baker and Phil Scott just need to ditch a party they have nothing in common with anymore and come on over to our side. There's plenty of room among us Democrats. There's no room for decency among Rethuglicans.

(290 posts)I would not vote for him, but unlike other Republicans I don't get bent out of shape about him. He's similar to the way Romeny was in that he knew he couldn't do much and had to work with the legislature.
sheshe2
(83,937 posts)No similarity other than they are both Republicans. Romney was an absentee Governor who wanted to be President. Baker stays and does his job and has no qualms about taking on tRump.
