Why State Supreme Court races matter for every Ohioan
Depending on what voters decide, injured Ohioans, and Ohios utility customers, might, or might not, come out ahead in November.
Two of the Ohio Supreme Courts seven members are running for reelection this year: Republican Justices Judith French and Sharon L. Kennedy.
Democratic Judge Jennifer Brunner, of the 10th Ohio District Court of Appeals, is challenging Justice Frenchs reelection. Democratic Judge John P. ODonnell, of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, is challenging Justice Kennedys reelection.
The Supreme Court is now 5-2 Republican. If voters elect Brunner and ODonnell, the court would be 4-3 Democratic.
Ohioans are supposed to think their Supreme Court doesnt have much leeway in making decisions: The Ohio Revised Code is just a big cookbook, and justices merely follow its recipes.
Big Business, Big Insurance and Big Utilities know better: The courts political makeup can be crucial in keeping things the way they are in
Ohio. Maybe, though, keeping things the way they are isnt the way things should be.
