So if you didn't know already, the reason democrats leave judgeships vacant is because the GOP blocks them at every turn.

because of said blocking. And then when the GOP took over, one of the first things they did was to clear the path for any blocking from their opposition by completely ignoring/dismissing the "blue slip" rule/courtesy, where if Senators submitted a (traditionally "blue" ) form expressing their objections to a nominee who hailed from their state, then the nomination was basically DOA. No more.
