A handful of Proud Boys — the self-described “western chauvinists” who are classified a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) — volunteered at a recent event held in Antrim County for GOP U.S. Senate nominee John James.

James is challenging U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.) this fall. About six men in black and yellow Proud Boys garb were at the Aug. 22 event that hosted him, per reporting and a photograph from Interlochen Public Radio (IPR).

The men volunteered at the northern Michigan event. The part pig roast, part open shooting range was put on by the Antrim County Conservative Union.
