Election machine glitch delays early voting in Fort Bend, sparking calls for investigation

A technological issue on Tuesday got early voting off to a delayed start in Fort Bend County; causing frustration for voters and prompting recriminations from elected officials.

Election officials apparently set the wrong date in the electronic poll books, which are used to check voters in and also provide information about the voter, according to John Oldham, Fort Bend County Elections Administrator.

Earlier in the summer, officials put the early voting start date as Oct. 19—the original date for early voting. However, Gov. Greg Abbott announced in July that early voting would begin Oct. 13.

“It was on our end. We should’ve caught it. We should’ve fixed it, but we didn’t,” said Oldham.
