First week of early voting in Cuyahoga County (OH) had higher turnout than 2016

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Nearly twice as many Cuyahoga County residents cast their ballots during the first week of early voting this year compared to those who voted during the same period in 2016.

According to board of elections records, 4,753 voted during the first five days of early voting in 2016, from Wednesday, Oct. 12 to Tuesday, Oct. 18. This year, early voting kicked off on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and 9,156 voted through Monday evening.

In both years, weekend early voting for the presidential election didn’t begin until later in October. Weekend hours in Cuyahoga County this year begin on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Through the end of the day Monday, the board had received 19,034 mailed-in or dropped-off ballots. A spreadsheet of the number of absentee ballots requested and returned from voters in all of the county’s municipalities is updated daily here. A total of 317,493 prospective voters requested absentee ballots this year.

Held their votes back when Ohio put Obama over the top and Ohio was called causing Rove to flip his cork on Fox? That area is Democratic.

The surprise for me was all the Counties along the Ohio River went for Obama. That area had been Republican for over 100 years. Wonder who they will go for this year?

The reason that urban areas aren't posting huge numbers of actual people early voting in person is that OH only allows one early voting place per county. So in a a large urban county, it's hard to do a lot of volume for in person early voting. Still, turn out is up in Cuyahoga and Franklin (the two urban democratic counties).
