Political Wire (paywall)With Donald Trump back out on the campaign trail, its clear hes doubling-down on the same unpopular message that gave Joe Biden his recent surge in the polls.
In the last 24 hours, Trump has claimed hes immune to the virus, attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci and once again slammed lock downs, social distancing and other measures designed to tamp down the spread.
Heres why thats a terrible message:
* Trump himself caught the virus and ended up in the hospital while he mocked the idea of wearing a mask.
* Theres no evidence hes immune to the virus. For instance, a Nevada man has now been infected twice.
* Fauci remains one of the most popular people in the country, as evidenced by a new Trump campaign ad featuring Facui over the doctors objections.
* The American public overwhelmingly supports mask wearing, lock downs and other measures to control the virus.
* Coronavirus cases are rising again across the country.
In fact, it might be the worst possible pitch you could make to voters in the final days of this campaign.

(52,253 posts)He appears to be a terrible politician because we're so used to judging them by the standards for democracy. By those lights, he's made nearly every mistake in the book. Alienating and offending the vast majority of Americans seems pretty dumb in a democracy.
he is more of a threat though, because he is an authoritarian criminal. His strategy is to get enough of a minority to vote for him to provide plausible cover for him to steal the election. But if the voter suppression is institutionalized already, and he is adding hurdles to voting, intimidation, and disinformation. He will follow with the craziest post-election challenges we've ever seen in this country, perhaps even topping the Tilden-Hayes mess in 1876.
Hopefully, we win with enough of a margin to prevent this, but that's his strategy and it's a real threat.
And that's why his politics are what they are. He wants a fervent 45%, he'll steal the rest. He's not trying to actually get 51% of the vote.
