Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have never blocked a poster, but if I could block David Pakman as a "source" I sure
as hell would. If you are a fan of breathless self-promotion and bullshit, he's your guy.

If that's not commercial spam, I don't know what is.

The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)Since no one knows who made the post brought to the jury, there is no way the jury can know a person does something incessantly. A person alerting on these as spamming would risk sanction for alerting in bad faith, because detection of patterns in behavior is impossible to a jury, and the alert might strike many as an attempt at shutting down debate, rather than at checking an exercise in long-term trolling.
That rule works against people who sign up and link immediately to some commercial enterprise, but cannot really be applied to anything else.
ihas2stinkyfeet
(1,400 posts)oh, for the mods.
i dont think ppl get in too much trouble for alerting, tho. admin also looks at who is on ignore.
so, go ahead and put them on ignore. i did.

I guess I can take him in small doses, but I won't go out of my way to seek out his stuff.
Love the youthful enthusiasm, but not ready to anoint him as a major voice I'll follow.

(42,862 posts)Unfortunately, video-posts from "blocked" users are STILL displayed on the DU home page. So, blocking any posters who chronically post annoying and useless Packman videos WILL help to clean up the "Video & Multimedia" forum... the crappy videos still appear in the right column of the home page.
I'm grateful that Packman will sometimes "brand" his videos with a recognizable thumbnail... and I can skip over those. But sometimes (and all too often) the thumbnail image will be deceptive and I'll click on it without realizing it's one of his meandering musing videos.
I always feel resentful that I've been "Rick-Rolled" again.
And, yes... it IS INDEED SPAM because he gets $$$ and other benefits from every click.

As it is, my preference is for news that is read rather than audio or video. I read much faster with better comprehension than listening or watching.

videos. Pakman himself is just fine, one of the people I hung around with in high school at AV club, Junior Classical League, debate club, AP English, standing at dances with three other guys looking at the girls ....

(4,436 posts)That anybody who is a regular here feels the same way about the extraordinarily long winded videos. If he just gave the 10 second intro, and played the clip, and then ended it, it wouldnt be so insufferable.
As it is, if I were in the jury for a spam review, I think I would vote him off the island. But thats just me.
David, if you are reading this- please, dear God, stop with the long commentary.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)Every click equals more money for his YouTube endeavor. Every click tells YouTube that they should "recommend" his videos to others throughout YouTube.
Because he's making money from deceptive and content-free videos... it's TOTALLY SPAM.

(23,322 posts)Not only is he late to the game with all of his commentary but he comes at the subject matter like he has new and insightful information and he just never does. Ever. I can usually spot the videos before clicking on them but once in a while I get fooled then it is a game for me to click out of them before I actually have to hear him speak.

(14,576 posts)Pakman has like 20 minutes of himself analyzing maybe a minute of actual footage. Honestly, when a YouTube video looks good enough to play, I usually turn it off if Pakman comes on first because I don't want to hear him. I want to look at the actual footage and come to my own conclusions.
And if you will permit one more rant about websites like CNN, the Hill, Huffington Post. Some people (me) like to just read the articles and then go into the video only if they are interested in it. But you don't have that choice, do you? They always ram the video down your throat, try to make you watch it before anything else. And all it does is parrot the first couple paragraphs of the actual article. Why can't we just read the article and NOT have an auto play set on the video?
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,855 posts)Although I frequently stop watching his analyses and explanations, either by forwarding through the videos or ending them before they're over.
If I knew NOTHING about politics or the issues at hand, then I'd probably appreciate his lengthy explanations. He elucidates well, at least.
Edit: I actually get more annoyed by the talking heads on TV who try to entice the audience to return after a commercial break, then give us a big serving of nothing-burger.

feels necessary to start a thread and get a gang to ding a Democratic voter and supporter whose personal style you don't like?
He's a hard working guy, on the side of the Democrats, just trying to make his way in life.
Don't watch him if he annoys you.
Well said.

(11,316 posts)a video blog. I don't appreciate the attempt to capitalize the DU site (which I depend on) -- or my clicks on a "come-on" heading. And the idea that anyone sporting a D beside their name -- is automatically deserving of my respect, appreciation or support .... Can't buy that one.

(6,044 posts)I am reminded of the the mid and late twentieth century college professors who had captive audiences due to class attendance rules. On entered the classroom knowing that time-in the next fifty minutes- would stretch like warmed taffy and one could best survive the ordeal by calling upon one's daydreaming skills or slow-diving into the Jungian collective unconscious.

I agree the posts of his videos should be labeled Pakman, although Im getting better at avoiding, they look kind of generic.
