Couple thoughts why I'm not surprised.

1. Obama wasn't running against a whacked out, lunatic emperor wannabe. He ran against 2 guys who had some semblance of rational thought and behaved with decorum, like adults. No matter how much we disagreed on policy with McCain or Romney, they were reasonably principled men. The mushy middle was not as turned off by them as they may be now, after a 4 year horror movie.

2. Biden is white.

I would add that Americans are terrified of the lunatic in charge at the moment so it makes sense.
I think this is important because Cornell was one of the best numbers guys for Obama.
