TX-23: San Antonio mayor endorses Gina Ortiz Jones in race for Texas' 23rd Congressional District
In a rare move, Mayor Ron Nirenberg has endorsed Democratic candidate Gina Ortiz Jones in a tight race in a congressional district that stretches from San Antonio to the Texas borderlands.
Gina Ortiz Jones experienced first-hand what its like to have a community that invests in working people, Nirenberg said Wednesday.
Its what allowed her to grow up healthy, get an education, and serve our country honorably in the Air Force and in Iraq. Im proud to endorse Gina, because she is rooted in our community, and she will be a champion that our city and working families deserve in Congress.
Nirenberg, an independent who calls himself a progressive, tends not to wade into partisan political battles and rarely makes endorsements. A notable exception came when Nirenberg backed former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro in the Democratic presidential primary.
But Nirenberg stayed out of the fray after Castro dropped out, and he hasnt formally endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee.
Nirenberg didnt make an endorsement in the race for Texas 23rd Congressional District in 2018, when Jones was up against Will Hurd, a Republican incumbent who commanded bipartisan support and respect from local leaders regardless of party affiliation. Jones narrowly lost that election.
