TX-03: Incumbent Van Taylor faces Democrat Lulu Seikaly in fast-changing, competitive Collin Count
Collin County has been a reliably red area that for years has elected conservative Republicans to federal and local government.
But in seemingly an instant, Democrats have become viable candidates because of demographic shifts and President Donald Trumps declining popularity in the suburbs. These factors could manifest in the surprisingly hotly contested District 3 congressional race between Republican incumbent Rep. Van Taylor and Democratic Party challenger Lulu Seikaly.
For 18 years the seat was safely held by Republican Sam Johnson, who never had a serious challenge and often ran unopposed. He died in May after retiring in 2018.
In 2018, Taylor won the district by 10 percentage points over Democrat Lorie Burch. Now he must fend off Seikaly, a Democrat who, like so many other residents, just moved into the bustling area.
This election presents a very stark contrast. Do we want freedom? Do we want to own what we make or do we want a socialist system, where government takes what you make and then decides who to redistribute it to, Taylor said. I believe in freedom, and as I talk to voters around Collin County ... they want to vote for freedom and they do not want to live in a socialist country.
Seikaly, who is not a socialist, said shes a better fit for the district.
