Ohio Supreme Court to decide whether Secretary of State Frank LaRose was justified in rejecting elec

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Supreme Court has agreed to hear whether Secretary of State Frank LaRose was justified in rejecting a Democratic appointment to the Ashtabula County Board of Elections for alleged election misconduct.

With the Nov. 3 general election less than three weeks away, the case could determine whether the county elections board is composed of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans (as elections boards in Ohio usually are) or if Republicans hold a majority.

After Democrat Luanne Laasko resigned from the Ashtabula County Board of Elections in late August, the Ashtabula County Democrats tried to name their chair, Eli Kalil, to the open seat.

However, last week LaRose, a Columbus-area Republican, informed Kalil that he “would not be a competent member” of the elections board.

The reason, LaRose stated, is that Kalil was “investigated for encouraging a constituent to forge the signature of another person on a voter registration form, and for altering the dates on voter registration forms.”
