I can hardly believe it but

my husband just registered to vote. Honestly I never thought I would see this day. He has always said that there was no reason to vote because your vote does not matter anyway! I am beyond happy. He hates Trump with a passion so.........I am celebrating tonight!

My generation (I'm 68) had more interest in social issues and politics. We were told that if we didn't vote we were part of the problem. Granted, I am old and I don't know a lot of kids. I was practically baptized a Democrat and my parents were second generation French Canadian. They were grateful to live in this country and they passed that on to us. Anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

they appear to be suggesting that more visible activities, like protests, have more effect, and they have a point there. But my response is that there are meny things one can do to enrich one's life, and breathing is usually not on that list. But, if you don't breathe, nothing else you do will improve your life. Voting, I believe, is like breathing. It's the starting place from which all other political action arises.

But even if it also is the ending place ...

I used to bug my mother when I was young (I'm much older now) but she used to say it wouldn't matter anyway. I couldn't believe it. She was born before women had the vote and I just couldn't wait to turn 21 and vote for what women fought so hard for. My dad always voted (D) and felt it was a citizen's right and duty. He would say if you didn't choose the leaders, someone else will will choose for you. All of us grown kids voted but we could never get my mom to do it. I don't know if she did after I moved out of state but she never mentioned it. I'm so encouraged by today's young people voting in such greater numbers and very proud for them. I think if you start young, it becomes a habit as a citizen, something adults do. In so many ways those who didn't vote at all are responsible for the rise of Donald Trump because so many people couldn't be bothered to say "Oh God, NO."

My wife wasn't registered to vote for years, not even when I ran for office in five local elections. Last year I finally convinced her to register, and we both voted for Biden on October 6.

Celebrate to your heart's content, hopefully he voted for a winner!

Really, I broke up with a guy once for this very reason. It was like a little sneak preview into other aspects of his personality that I eventually became aware of as we dated. Sort of like the tip of the iceberg.

People who don't vote because "here was no reason to vote because your vote does not matter anyway", which your husband does NOT belong in anymore....

I know the much used reasoning that "every vote counts" and that if everyone thought as your husband did at one time, no one would vote, and it wouldn't be a democracy etc...

But the other reason that is just as powerful to me is that I live in a country that is a democracy. I have a right to vote. To have a say in who will make decisions on my behalf in government. Why would I forfeit that right? For a few minutes (at least for me) every couple of years? Why would one choose NOT to exercise this right?

My brother who is 68 is voting for the first time also. I was gobsmacked when I heard this news. Of course he's voting for Biden/Harris.

I actually attribute it to absentee voting. I think he was always a bit intimidated about going to the polls because he is one of those men who doesn't like to look stupid or ask questions about how to do something that he should know how to do. I have no idea if this is one of the reasons he's voting or not, but I know him quite well and I'll bet the ease of registering and voting at home made him feel competent to do this.
